Is it a codex specific thing, or is there some nook or cranny in the rulebook where it still states only 100 points of wargear may be taken by a single model.

I was under the impression it was a 4th ed thing.

It's a codex specific thing, specifically the specific codexes that have a general armory instead of specific options for each model.

Specifically any codex before (iirc) Eldar, which changed the format from an armory (old style) to specific options for specific models (new style).

but remember one thing that is lost that makes those old Codexes kind of broken, is that the rules for "upgrading" your wepons are lost to time from the rulebooks. Specifically that you once dropped all your base weapons(4th edition wording), or just the weapon upgraded(3rd edition), when you purchased a weapon upgrade from the armory.

Example: 3rd edition Space marine Codex Chaplain wants to take a Plasma pistol in place of the Bolt Pistol: he loses the Bolt Pistol.
4th edition Space marine Codex Chaplain wants to take a Plasma pistol in place of the Bolt Pistol: he loses the Bolt Pistol and (technically) his cozious arcanum as well. Note- nobody actually played it this way even though it was rules as written(and also why I quit at the beginning of fourth and came back to 40k in 5th).

Back to the regularly scheduled rules:

Now since the rules for replacing "stock" weapons and wargear no longer apply to those Codexes with an armory; when you purchase new weapons you still keep your old ones as well(this includes keeping power armor when buying Artificer armor for Black templar, Witch, and daemon hunters). The Nice bit about this is the ability to have Bolt pistol, Chainsword, and pair of Lightning Claws on your Sergent.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

What does the chainsword do for you here? You get the one bolt pistol shot instead of none with just a pair of claws, but other than that there's no difference between the 'replace gear' guy and the 'keeps gear' guy. It seems kind of a minor thing to get excited over so maybe I'm missing something.
