Okay guys, I got a commissioned terrain project: I need to make limestone mountains. My client saw one of my digital paintings I made a few years back and wonders if I can make wargaming terrain mountains of the same form. Here's what they look like:

Spoiler:

Any advice on how I would go about with this project? I think I'm gonna make a whole board, or maybe one really big mountain that has trees on it. Texture-wise they should probably be like this:

Any example of terrain made by others that are quite similar are much appreciated,as well as suggestions with materials and such. thanks in advance!

Violence is not the answer, but it's always a good guess.

Look at the warhammer 40K rule book page 238/9. It has a picture of a research station with cliffs that look similar to your bottom picture. IIRC, they are made from tree bark.

But treebark is biodegradable. Wouldn't it disintegrate, even with varnish?

If you were looking at making a board, I would cut out the general shape of the mountain(s) out of polystyrene and stack 3 or 4 of roughly (try making it a small "snowman" effect with 1/2 an inch between each edge ) the same shape and glue them together with pva glue (leave same ground space between the mountains, there has to be a place to do some basic killing SOMWHERE ). Then I would take a hot wire cutter and cut it vertically, which should result in a similar texture as the bottom pic.

PS Sorry it's kinda confusing (in fact you probably had no clue what I just said ), but I'm away from all my terrain stuff, and I don't have a hot wire gun to begin with so I cant really give pics.

PSS I use too many smilies, don't I?

hmmm, getting the right sort of texture should be okay to do with a bit of trial and error (building up layers up material perhaps). I reckon the difficult part will be getting it to look right overall whilst still being playable. There's a good reason you don't see too many 40K games played on the side of a mountain.

Here's a suggestion though - how about going 'dwarvan caverns' style. Make the peaks so that you can take the tops off to reveal large halls and tunnels etc. You can play inside the mountain without having to compromise the look as much in order to accomodate models

Drink is the curse of the land. It makes you fight with your neighbor. It makes you shoot at your landlord, and it makes you miss him.
