The topic title says it all. The models all look great, the rules sound cool, so I don't know who to get first! Btw this is in addition to the codex since buying that is a given. So what are your suggestions fellow dakkaites?

A raider.

You'll use it.

Sly Marbo was originally armed with a power weapon, but he dropped it while assaulting a space marine command squad just so his enemies could feel pain.

Well I got some warriors, an archon, and Incubi so I guess that settles it.

I wish money went that far over here.

For $50 we'd get the codex. That's it. Even doubling it to $100, we'd get the codex and 1 box of something.

I do not understand why you people in Australia can play this game, you must be rich! Or save for a long time.

I buy my stuff 1 squad at a time. Generally 1 box/model per fortnight.

That said, consider this. The standard GW Hive Tyrant is $85au. Without postage, ordering a Forgeworld Hive tyrant costs $64au. A winged Hive Tyrant is $88au. Yeah, ordering a specialty model, characterized by being overpriced, it cheaper for us. Getting an even bigger variant of it costs us $3au more.

Would it not be better to have a friend by and send them to you from UK/USA?

Not really. I'm more of an impulse buyer. I don't plan when I'll buy my next box set, and I don't like waiting usually (I'll make an exception for the gorgeous Forgeworld models).

I like going into a store, talking to the staff about my army so far, and checking out models before I buy one, even if I have a purchase planned. it's the atmosphere as well as the game. if all I did was buy and paint models, I would have quit a long time ago for good. I just wish they'd ease up on price gouging us Aussies.

If it makes you feel any better I ended up spending like 70 dollars instead. So 50 bucks doesnt take you that far.

I went for 3 reavers, archon, warriors and a raider. Then see what the main army box will have and work from there.

For the love of all that is Holy, buy from Maelstrom Games.

Not only do you pay UK prices, but you get 10-15% off said prices, and Free (yes, that's Free,) Shipping to you Ozzies, which ends up as about a 50% saving compared to the Oz Prices.

And buy a Raider!

What Gwar said.

It's like going to the local store and there being a 30-50% sale just because you're there.

I went and looked at Maelstrom games. What's left of my Tyranid 1500pt army would cost $400+ in a store. From there, it's under half that. Guess I'm an online buyer now. I mean, hell, I could throw in another 1000 points and still not spend as much as I would in a store getting the rest of my army.

Yep, by having their prices in pounds it changes as the strength of our dollar does rather than get set at a "set"* price.

*price is not really set it still rises with the global price rises

To be sure, brick and mortar stores are really starting to fall behind the online market for gaming supplies. And it isn't a situation where the after market is driving down prices, it's a situation where physical storefronts adhere stupidly to MSRP while trying to ignore the fact that internet merchants are running circles around them in terms of competitive pricing and selection.

On topic, I'd get a box of Wyches and a box of Warriors if I was a new DE player with $50 to spend after Codex.

I think raider is next on my hitlist (wyches gonna hafta wait) I never heard of Maelstrom games but if they have better USA prices then GW I'll check em out.

Maybe if I ace my midterms I can "persuade" my folks to get me a raider out of the goodness of their hearts

Warstore is better if you're in the US. Maelstrom mostly works out for Australia because of the free shipping. While we do save a bit if we were to import from the US the shipping quickly kills it.

The thing is, the brick and mortar stores are why GW games are successful. Even though online retailers, and other hobby stores, can undercut them pretty nicely on price, they don't attract new people to the hobby. Walking through a mall, seeing a huge red and yellow 'Games Workshop' sign and a few enthusiastic people talking and painting with staff giving pointers and running introductory games, that does build interest, especially in people who have no idea about the hobby.

The brick and mortar stores don't need to make a profit - once people get into the hobby, even if they end up buying online, still nets GW money, since those model kits came from GW anyway. The stores are there to grab people mostly.

The main issue isn't B&M stores.

The main issue is GW and Australia. It's not Maeslstrom TRYING to get into the Oz market, it's GW's fault for Jacking up the prices by 50% across the board.

Not to divert the thread, but I just went by games workshop and wound up spending around $60 pre-ordering the new codex and Warriors. I was originally planning to just get the warriors, but decided to get the codex as well to be able to start an army (I was sold after being able to look through the store copy of the codex along with Warrior frames ). Anyway, does anyone have any advice on what units to get later (besides an archon and more warriors or wyches), for a starting Dark Eldar army?

What if after getting the codex you only had $26 left and that was only enough to buy half of a box?

??? How are you doing you maths, it's a 60% minimum and things like Incubi are ~69% iirc

It's funny because its seems to rely mostly on people purchasing from them while having no contact with any other country.

As it's my FLGS I do buy the occasional thing with the 40-50% markup, but that's because the staff there are alright.

To be fair, the TC is in the United States, where my suggestion holds true. If I had to pay twice the GW price for figures, I just wouldn't play Warhammer.

Maelstrom Games has free shipping.

P.S, an exorcist here is $100
a battleforce is $155
a baneblade is $165!

Do they think i'll rock up to my local GW (there are two in this area, one has a single gaming table and one has three) and drop $48 for a Codex then $155 for a battleforce, as a new player? Not to mention the rulebook, which is $96.
