I should be able / willing to buy new fantasy models next year, so I'm wondering if
anything I'm interested in will have a rules update in the near future.

Honestly. If you're going to take that tone, then the answer is, "No."

The answer is basically, when ever the hell they fell like it, and when you hear rumours about it wait 1 or 2 years.

According to current rumours, the next army books seem to be O&G (Q1), Khemri (Q2), then OK, then maybe Bretonnia.
But rumours change, and there are second waves. So better make decisions on what armies have ATM and hope that one day they get a nice update.

That's fine. It just means I don't even look at WHFB for several years.

Why? Perhaps you should explain your cryptic first post ("anything I'm interested in"), because rumours only reach at best 12 months into the future and not everything currently existing is crap. Actually the game balance improved with the new edition, as did the number of WHFB players.

If "anything I am interested in" is just Wood Elves, you might have a hard year ahead of you playwise, unless you start a second army. But then again, Wood Elf players have learnt to be patient, getting updates only every 12 years or so.
But if you are desperate, you can believe everything said in this thread http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=267630

Correct. Their last 6th edition release was a major overhaul of the same size and quality as the current DE release.

I posses an intimate knowledge of the inner thoughts and motivations of GW as well as their intended release schedule of all products from now until the end of time... unfortunately I had to go into the heads of the executives at GW to get this information, and what I found there has driven me completely and utterly mad...BWUAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
no seriously no one knows when stuff is released except for the watchers in the dark
