I've decided in the future to build an "infantry horde" Imperial Guard army in the future (i.e. when I'm done collecting Cadians). However, I've hit upon a stumbling block: should I have (as the title of this thread suggests) Vostroyans, Mordians or Valhallans as my Infantry army?

I've decided to use Cadians as my Infantry Wave army. However, I still don't know what my "balanced" army should be, though.

Here are some pros and cons for each:

Mordians
Pros:
- Uniforms should be easier to paint than Vostroyans
- Thinking of making a campaign involving Mordians

Cons:
- Only weapons (besides Heavy Weapons) I can upgrade my troops with are Grenade Launchers

Valhallans
Pros:
- Soviet theme would fit perfectly with the Massed Infantry idea
- Would include Commander Chenkov+ conscripts

Cons:
- An army with Conscipts+ Chenkov would be expensive (both monetarily and point-wise)

Vostroyans
Pros:
- Actually has command squads
- Should be cheaper because of that

Cons:
- They look difficult to paint (I'm relatively new to painting and modelling)

So which one should I pick?

Other: Cadians

The biggest reason for this is that Cadians are plastic. For every other army, if you can't find exactly what you're looking for, it is going to be extremely challenging for a new person to convert the metal models in order to make them wysiwyg. If you're good enough at converting to make a mordian model fly, then you're good enough at converting to partial-scratch-build cadians to look identical to mordians.

Plus, metal models are also more expensive, moneywise, and, due to having all of 3 different poses and being very old models, look worse.

If you're looking for a classy-themed guard army that's cheap and easy to convert, I'd go with Cadians. A small amount of work per model will give you Cadians with jackboots (taking off the shin armor), and more of a dress uniform feel (shave off the shoulder pads), and with more rugged technology (a touch of knife work on the lasguns). You don't even need to know how to use GS to pull this off. If you DO have GS skills, all this leaves you with is carving down the flak armor and putting on some buttons, which is a pretty easy task. Also, shaving down helmets and putting ears and hair back on the guardsmen is a pretty easy GS thing to learn to do as well.

Metal models aren't bad. A lot of people hate them, but they're not much more difficult to work with than plastics, unless you're doing conversions.

That said, Vostroyans are my favorite of those three lines. Valhallans are an older model line, and Mordians are a bit flavorless in my opinion, but Vostroyans both have beautiful sculpts and wonderful fluff. If you don't mind working with metal models, Vostroyans are the way to go, IMO.

It does help that Vostroyans are sold in squads of 10 (or, more accurately, 7 Guardsmen, 1 Sergeant, and 1 Heavy Weapons Team) for $35 US. Now that looks, on its face, more expensive than $25 Cadian infantry squads, but keep in mind the heavy weapons team - that addition actually makes it cheaper than Cadians, as long as you plan on using HWTs or HWSs (with heavy bolters) in your army.

You can buy individual Vostroyans and Vostroyan HWTs if you prefer Lascannons, Mortars for your HWTs, and things other than Flamers for your special weapons.

Edit: Do consider one other thing as well - using metal models for a horde army isn't always the best decision, as all those metal minis are a bitch to carry around. Metal minis individually don't seem like much, but put a few hundred in a case and it'll get heavy.

Elysian Drop Troops FTW!!!! But seriously, there really good for infantry because they're quick strike based and mainly use Valkyries and Vultures and sometimes scout sentinels.

I have decided to mix and match my IG army to reflect a very diverse and wide ranging group of combined units. I have pure Cadians, Catachans, Steel Legion, Hybrid Cadian/Catachan (Catachan Legs, Cadian Torso/Arms, Catachan heads-These are my favorite) and i just bought some forgeword Cadian Shotgun Vets but i use Pig Iron Kolony Militia heads. I am painting all of them as close to identical as i can and the finished troops look great, even if you mix them up.

This is a personal selection completely and not for everyone.

As for the Poll--I would choose other and Armageddon Steel Legion. Lascannons, Plasma, GLs plus an extensive selection of officers, commissars, and Sgts to fill out your army and they have the whole gas mask- Great coat look that is very cool.

As for picking which army Guard army to do I say the Vostroyans as they are very detailed and good looking models and have command squads.

Elysian Drop Troops 1500pts

Renegades & Heretics 2056pts

Cadians: Metal armies are sooo expensive, and Vostroyans are VERY hard to get right, trust me I tried.

For a 1,000 Point Veteran Vostroyan list (Which is what they are in their fluff) was around $300.

My Cadian Artillery/Powerblob army is only around $200 for 1,000 points.

If you are looking at metal models, I imagine that going for FW models would not be beyond the pall of reason. That being said, I would say go for the Vostroyans. Their models are neat looking, and they come off as really kick-ass in the IG Omnibus...

Vostroyans, if you can get around the ridiculous hats they are pretty sweet models. I just lopped off the heads and used them like this:
