I never thought of doing a pre-heresy army until I saw some on this site. It looks like a great opportunity to kit bash and basically do whatever I want. The way I see it, the heresy was caused by one vain, petty, maniac who was supported by a bunch of immature, pouting, not so bright, maniacs. I mean, Angron actually lobotomized his guys, right? So Im not in love with any of the traitor legions. The Dark Angel traitors seemed like a different story. I have no doubt some turned to Chaos during the Heresy and have been bad actors ever since. What about the Fallen who fought the Imperium because they thought Caliban was going to be flattened? They didn't want to fight their brothers, but couldn't stand by, or take part in, the destruction of their home. So here's how I see it. Why would a Fallen, who realized his mistake and wanted to atone, turn himself in to the Dark Angels? Those guys aren't exactly reasonable in this matter. The Fallen could look forward to being chased down by the Ravenwing, tortured, and thrown in a cell to languish for however long a space marine lives. Thats great. So what if the Fallen, the ones who aren't Chaos goons, assemble to fight chaos or achieve the goal of absolution? We know Cypher is a Fallen magnet, but whether he is a bad guy is unknown. He is probably bad by "modern" Imperial standards but a good guy based on the Emperors and The Lions founding principles. After all, whatever the Emperor intended, the Imperium is an oppressive, superstitious, ignorant, borderline evil empire. So this project is based on the idea Cypher is working towards the absolution of the Dark Angels and the return of Lion El Johnson. "Good" Fallen are contacted by Cypher, are attracted to Cypher, or maybe Cypher goes to them, forming an army to achieve those ends. Im going to use the CSM codex, it seems that would be more closely related to the old Legion structure. SM Codex no good, DA codex certainly no good. With careful choices, the army could be used as loyal or traitor. Black armor, maybe a few green to represent contemporary Dark Angels who were slapped in the face with some Cypher truth. Anyway, thoughts, criticism, input would be greatly appreciated. Ill post some pics when I finish the first set of kit bashing. Or when I find time away from my Whitescars.

Well it is a good theory but alot of users actually see another reason why the fallen angels are the good guys. and the dark angels are the bad guys.

Yeah, I guess the whole good guy bad guy thing is skewed when talking about 40k. I kinda have a hard time calling the SM's good guys since they are just as likely to wipe out a plabet as liberate it.

I swear around the time of the 13th black crusade they had a bit o' fluff stating cypher was rabble rousing against imperial rule on several planets, weakening them for when chaos forces landed. Fun fact associated with that, he managed to out smart an entire team of assassins sent to get him.

Anywho, im eagerly awaiting, as this sounds the shizzz!

Sounds like a good plan. I like the whole idea of the Fallen so I'll be watching with interest.

Initial 5 Fallen. No real theme, just threw them together for paint testing. Hopefully the bits bags will have enough to do what I want.

Black doesn't look too bad. It just looks very... bland. Try a dark green highlight.

I will be doing a fallen squad for my CSM army sometime soon. If you are unsatisfied with the colors, take a look in your CSM codex on the pages that show the different legion's color schemes at the bottom. There is one that is labled unkown. It has dark green armor and a black robe with a red chaos star. I think that would be a strong color theme for your marines.

I'm loving the idea, maybe if use some fine white highlight lineson edges, something to break up the black so it doesn't become to over bearing

its safe to say that relictors are the greatest army a man , nay human can own.

I think the black looks good, you just need to highlight more of the actual marine with the same colour, specifically around the eyes. Speaking of eyes, a spot of white in the very corner can really make them pop out. Good work so far!

Try to paint the weapons red, may connect them even more with the dark angels, it will show their origins.

Thanks everyone for the input. I painted a pretty large Black Templar Crusade a couple years ago. I think I'll trot out that technique and see how it goes. Im also going to try some green stuff for more robes. These models arent complete, maybe if they are more ornate, the black will work better. This was a mix or regal blue and chaos black.

MADLarkin: I took a look at the CSM codex like you said. I like that scheme too, but its do "contemporary" Dark Angel for me. I have my heart set on a Heresy era army. Incidently, I painted about 2000 points worth of Purge. They look really good. You know what, I'm going to try that black too.

I worked out the black colors. I think it gives the model a little more depth. Anyway, I am leaning away from a Fallen army with each model armed and armored almost completely differently. Im going more for a Legion look. Ive also fished my old school Rogue Trader Land Raider out of my bits drawer and bought an OOP Predator off the trusty ebay. Ill post something when I havesomething worth looking at.

Well, I have officially given up this project. Im just not satisfied with any of my models. This is what I get for getting wrapped up in fluff instead of substance. Im going to finish up my Whitescars and start messing around with Orks, and CSM. I may try another Pre-Heresy army at some point. Thanks for all the input.

If you go back to them, a quick and easy way to do black armour is to do a charadon granite, then use a lighter grey as a highlight.
To darken it back down a thin wash or 2 with badab black is good as you can see the slight highlight changes.
You can see it on the Black Legion corpse on my dreads base if you look in my gallery

As for the 13th crusade.... Cypher allegedly called himself the voice and spread dissent in order to draw out the dark angels. It was part of a pact he made with Abaddon and drawing the darkangels to the caliban sector, effectively neutralising them from Cadia's defence.

You could mix it up with brettonian helms or FW stuff to get an archaic look.

Pre-heresy dark angels would be a cool idea. Which is saying something from a SW player

PS i love white scars too

If you want more ideas on who to add to the army then read the DA horus heresy books and Angels of Darkness by GavThorpe, they're good and they link in with it. Like where you're going with it though

THanks for the advice guys. I havent totally given up, just need to refocus. I usually have several projects going on and I bit off a little too much on this one. Between Orks, Whitescars, a Word Bearers experiment and Fallen, my brain and wallet are tapped out.

You need to either take a short break from the hobby or do an army completely different. Just so you can get the drive back!
