Hallo Dakkadakka people!
So i ive been wondering for some time. Who is the 5th edition's Underdog and leet army's?
Ive read several forums and websites about different opinions and discussions about the new set of rules and who they benefit the most and who they make the new Underdog.

So far ive understand that the mighty Space Marines are suffering the most in this 5th Edition and is going to have a hard time. Compared to others like the Imperial Guards who apereantly is going to have a time of there lifes as i have read about them.

I might be wrong. I ain't the big analystic but what i want is have a good discussion about the different benefits and issues about every army in the Warhammer 40k 5th Editon and your sight and opinion on them.
This discussion can also help other forum members about there lack of knowledge about other army's and also help me as ive only read like 4-5 of the new codex'es so far.

So dig in Dakkadakka members and let's find a conklusion or a picture of who Thou Shall Fear! (In your opinion)

btw. Sorry for the bad English. I am Danish

I wouldn't say Space Marines are suffering! IMHO the Vanilla codex has one of the strongest builds in this edition (being meched up). I'm of course talking about Vulkan smash! Being that the current meta game is mech, twin linking meltas is just too good. The twin linking of flamers is just gravy.

Blood Angels, Space Marines, Space Wolves, Imperial Guard are the top ones. Chaos Space Marines and Chaos Daemons are also up there.

The worst would probably be Necrons, Daemonhunters, and Dark Angels.

I wouldn't say Chaos is top-tier.

They maybe aren't bottom tier, but they're not great.

My personal list of current armies "competitive playability":
Best Armies: BA, SW, IG; There's a few "maybes", but these 3 are the best of the best
Worst Armies: Necrons, DH, WH, Tau, maybe even BT

Before I get flamed, I play footslogging Eldar, which I would say is more in the "Worst" category than "Best".

Hahahaahahahah...hahah...ha. No, just no. Space Marines are still holding their own just fine.

Top of the heap is Orks. Sorry everyone else, but nothing beats Orks.

Then there's you're very good guy: Space Wolves, Blood Angels, Imperial Guard.

Then you're regular good guys that can still beat any one if they try hard enough (expect Orks, which we've covered): good and bad Space Marines, Tyranids.

Then some really lackluster guys who will never win without substantial luck: Eldar, Dark Eldar.

Then the bottom dwellers. These guys can't win except against one another, and Tau always lose that fight: Tau, Necrons.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Short answer..

Who does well- anyone with a current edition codex

Who does poorly IMO - anyone with a previous edition codex.

Who does alright despite not having a current dex - Eldar and Chaos

800 brethren and 2,000 other personnel were expected to reach Crows World within no more than 12 hours. They never arrived.

Let the Bell toll for those that encounter us, not for what we have encountered!

I would probably say that BA, SW and IG are the top tier armies. These armies tend to give more bang for less tactical effort then other armies.

As for who are the underdogs, probably Chaos, Orks and Eldar as despite being previous edition armies, they can do well in the right hands and situation. I'd probably rank these armies somewhere along the lines of middle tier.

Every 5th ed codex is pretty much on par with each other. Some have easier to use powerbuilds but all can make several solid all comers lists that will beat anyone if played correctly.

Eldar, tau, black templars, dark angles, sisters of battle, chaos marines have one or two builds each that can win against anyone if you bring your A-game.

Dark eldar (for less than one month), chaos demons and orks will absolutely massacre some one who isn't ready for what they can do which makes some people think they are more powerful than they actually are but if you can counter their tricks effectively they loose and they have a huge uphill battle against some lists.

Necrons really got nerfed bad in this edition and demon hunters are woefully outdated, outgunned, undermanned and over priced both are terrible now and are probably the next two codex's to get updates.
