Hello,
So at my LGS we have a couple of less then fresh smelling gentlemen, and none of us want to look for the mark of Nurgle, however he might be proud on some days. One really does not spend alot, and seems well, ackward especially when the fairer sex walks in, ( stares, and I think once actual drool came out). The other only comes in two days a week for friday night magic and a dnd game, hardly spends anything, and he used to come in for my Palladuim game, but I told him not to come back to the table I was at until he took a shower . Now keep in mind I do not own the store, I am the painting and terrain guy for wargames. I have talked in a social way to the other one and asked him about his personal hygine habits and found out that taking a shower once a wekk seemed the right thing to be subjecting others to. I also tend to assist on tourneys and the like. So put your ideas down, funny or not and lets enjoy a little fresh air I should note, songs are welcome to

No, spraying three colors on your minis does not count as painted! 5k+

Well, my FLGS does not smell the greatest, but it just has that atmosphere to it.. My original FLGS that my 9 year old self use to walk around was shut down 2 weeks ago. It was such a strange feeling, knowing it was gone.

..but back on topic, you just put up with the smells. (It isn't really that bad at my new store)..

I walk by and loudly exclaim "MAN, somebody STINKS!"

You'd be surprised what shame can do.

We had a guy once that the manager literally followed around with some air freshener before finally giving up and kicking them out. Yes, banned for BO form a freakin hobbyshop. Scary stuff people.

"Holy Sh*&, you've opened my eyes and changed my mind about this topic, thanks Dakka OT!"

The catpiss people are important. When we smell them, or see their torn, faded, cheeto stained shirts, or hear them mumble something incoherent to the only girl they are likely to see all day, we know that at least one group of people is less cool than we are.

Well you could pass out clothespins to everyone in the area and wear them on your noses until the smelly one gets the hint.
Or just refuse to let them play anything until they clean up their act.
Or you could just open a window and deploy upwind.

The thing to do that would be most appropriate would be to quietly pull him/them to the side, tell them that there have been complaints, and that you'd like to keep them as a customer, but that as you play in tight spaces with other people, they need to pay more attention to their personal hygiene. Either they will be so ashamed they will never come back, or they will shower before arriving. Either way, issue is resolved in a professional way.

In my university there was this room the Gaming society got to use all day and it was a big room but it had a lack of windows, so when someone smelled, the room smelled and there was a lot of smelly folk in the room so it was HORRENDOUS. No really. After a certain point a lot of people just stopped appearing, deliberately staying away from it and such.

However one day I had a project to do with a class mate and it was the only room with tables that was empty enough for us to stay in, plus we felt welcome. But the smell got to bad and we asked the cleaner to come in. Embarrassingly she kicked out everyone who smelled and asked that they do not return until they have taken a bath. I just wanted her to spray something.

Either way to deal with it, tell the people they smell and it is a quite a 'defined' smell. I noticed that most people dont actually realise how bad they smell due to there nose being over run by it (try smelling roses for 30 minutes constant, your nose will block out the smell after a while) So tell them and dont worry about being offensive, a few people thanked me when I told them, others just went all red faced. But no one was ever violent and the next day they looked as clean as a whistle. Also do not go "YOU fething STINK!!" like a child they will ignore you as if you are another bully in the crowd. Say it in a calm, serious and adult tone. Seriously though acting like a stuck up person, elitist or child to them will usually always never work, they dont want to listen to someone that sounds like their mother or little sister.

Confront them and remind them that they are an adult. If they can't get their gak together, have them banned. If my hobby was....stamp colllecting or....flower arranging...or salt and pepper shaker collecting I wouldn't tolerate someone who smelled like a turd collecting sunlight on the inside of an outhouse. Why should I tolerate it with model army men?

Well, since you have dialog with this person, point out that once per day is the social norm. Talk to him in a calm manner, like before.

When I managed a comic shop I volunteered to be on smelly guy duty. It drives away customers and makes people have less fun. That guy's feeling < everyone else. Bepolite, and if they don't get the hint be unpolite. The worst you can do is make them sad, which they're asking for anyway.

This. I think society in general would benefit from the rediscovery of the virtue of tact. Seriously, why do people think that saying 'hey, I'm just being honest' excuses completely ignorant and rude behaviour. Yes, you might be being 'honest', but you're also being a total dick.

As syanticraven said, just take them to one side and explain to them that their lack of hygeine is spoiling other people's enjoyment of the space, and to have some consideration for others by ensuring that they come to the shop having at least showered and de-odourised.

As Nurgle as my witness, I apologize for nothing

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Regardless, I suggest as has already been stated just talk to him on the side quietly. And if he gets mad, then you can rely on that -1 initiative to come in handy.

Nerd culture is weird. I mean, nerds are my people, but there are things people get away with that could not even be considered in the real world. Catpiss people are one the most talked about, but only the tip of the iceberg.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

My dad used to have a theory that this followed. It was faily simple, if you chose not to know someone until you get into a confrontation with them, then you may find yourself on the floor wondering what happend. It is fairly simple to carry this over to "Nerd" culture, as they typically are rather bright if possibly socially achward (although all are not). So keeping this in mind, one could sumise that they may know some thing about fighting from thier desire to emulate a book or ancient swordsman. Or worse case scenario, carry a couple capacitors around 50,000 volts capped and hit you with them after removing said caps. You have to love science applied to real life.

"Look. You Stink. That is your odor is offensive. Specifically your presence is an unpleasant stimulus to my sense of smell and that of others. I'm not calling you a bad person, or making any judgments about your worth as a whole. However, your scent does make it difficult to enjoy your presence or really do anything but resent it. Please take some steps to fix this, it'll make everyone comfortable, even yourself as people will react to you better. If you don't know how, feel free to ask. I'd be more than happy give you some information. Please, I'm not saying this to be mean I'm saying this to help."
