Ok, looking at a five Unit Assault, involving a Def Dred, Shootas and a Big Mek, vs. Bloodletters and a Skulltaker.
Let's say no wounds were given or taken by the Big Mek and Skulltaker--all wounds were taken within the Shoota squad and Bloodletter squad. If both squads are fearless, then when it comes time to see who won the assault and the loser rolls for wounds, can the loser allocate the wounds to the Big Mek, and not the squad of Shootas?

So, to simplify:
Can No Retreat wounds be assigned to a squad that hadn't suffered any casualties?
(I'm not answering because I'm not sure, not because I'm being a jerk)

Yes, a unit can suffer no retreat wounds even though you suffered none from the combat itself. In the same spirit that non-fearless units still get a leadership penalty wen their freinds are being bashed up in the same combat. EDIT: Humdidum, why didn't I read the OP? Anyway, yes and no. If the big mek is in a unit you can allocate a single wound to him (or a second after you've allocated one to each of the other members in the unit, being orks they are pretty much dead anyway. ) If they are on their own both units (the lone big mek and the orks) suffer wounds equal to what they lost by, they are not divided at all. (if they are both fearless ofc.) For example, a unit of bloodletters charge in and multicharge a lone mek and a unit of 30 orks and kill 15/30 of the boys. The boys then turn about and kill 3 letters. When calculating combat both the mek and the orks have lost by 12, the orks take 12 armour checks and the mek take a ld-test hoping for snake eyes. If big ghaz had called his waagh the same turn (making the mek fearless) the mek would instead of taking the test have taken 12 wounds, with armour saves.

It's a regular strategy used against Nid players. Bring a MC and a swarm of gribblies into a single combat, then when they lose, the MC gets to take No Retreat! wounds.
It's a spectacular way to kill Trygons and Tyrants.

This is clearly detailed under Independant Characters and Assaults (p. 49). The Independant character is considered to be a unit of only one Model. However, once the Attacks have been resolved, the character is once again considered to be part of the unit (and would thusly suffer any penalties for combat resolution, such as suffering additional wounds due to No Retreat!).

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

That, of course, only applies if the IC was joined to the unit to begin with...
