Do you mean Army Painter?

Strong Tone appears to be the most popular.

You can always go a cheaper route as well and pick up some Minwax at a local hardware store. It will leave your figures a little glossy, but its nothing that a little testors dull cote cant rectify. I would recommend finding something ot affix your minis to that can spin them to let the excess get thrown off the model.

the effect is almost identical to Army Painter though

Minuwax varnish in ebony will darker out the model real nice. But you have to use bright colors for the base colors. This is what it comes out like. Followed porkuslimes directions to do this.

This. I use it. Mission Oak satin. Depending on how dark you want it you can thin it with thinner or mineral spirits. I thinned mine about 20%.

I would use Citadel washes instead of dipping them. Better control of colour, matt finish (no need to use a matt varnish afterwards), other tones instead of just browns as with army painter and no toxic components. I used them to paint my 200+ army as seen in my blog quite quickly.

You can make your OWN washes for dirt cheap at home. Infact making them yourself you can make it how dark/light you want. Simply using cheap paint (folkart is an example) and some dish soap mixed with water then mix it until you get your desired effect.

But yea, minwax works decent enough, but after wards you have to dullcoat on them because it leaves the minis pretty shiney.

I dont have a picture of that model pre-dip but i do have a pic of a trygon painted the same way i did the gaunt.

And no the gaunt is not silver, it is the flash of the camera off of the varnish. Makes the bugs look slimy.

Heres a picture of my Delaque gang finished with Minwax Polyshades Missin Oak satin, thinned about 20%.

One thing about polyshades...make sure the paints you use are water based. Polyshades is solvent based and can dissolve and cause solvent based paints to run.

also ... dont brush to much when you are applying minwax as a dip. It will result in you brushing away your paints. You can always spray your models with matt finish so they are not so shiny.

Only if they are solvent/oil based. Water based paints (like GW paints) arent effected. Also vary how much you paint on depending on how much shading you want. If you are only trying to get shade in the details go light and it will get in the details and lightly tint the colors. A heavier coat will add a deep tint to the colors as well as the details.

That reminds me...dont be fooled by the term "dip", most people brush it on. Its not really recommended to actually dip or dunk the minis in it. You will end up with way too much on the mini.

I actually dipped my mini's into the can of minuwax. But i had the base clamped to a button that was glued to the bottom of a pencil. Dip the model and then spin it around in a bucket or can to remove extra varnish. They came out well for me. Recommend wearing latex gloves while doing this.
