i was looking through the rules and came upon the ordnance batteries section.

In reading various books if there is a miss by a mortar or missile it creates a huge hole in the ground.

With what i have in mind for an eventual tactic is to miss on purpose with a basilik earthshaker and create an impassable terrain for everything. However you would have to target blank space and then use some sort of terrain to symbolize the deep trench.....

My question is would this even be possible using current 40k rules?

Why would it be impassable? It's just a crater.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

If you keep blasting away at a certain spot it would get really deep and you would need to go around it.... hence you could theoretically guide your enemy to your guns and decimate them

It's not really fair on other armies if only SM can cross it and if as you said you keep blasting the same spot, making an extremely deep crater, how could a SM cross it?

A SM can't cross it i meant to take that out... which i have done.

but would that be allowed in gameplay/rules? to create impassable terrain using ordnance and such?

I don't think you can actually make it impassable. The best you can do is place a ton of craters. I wouldn't try that in tournament play, but if you're providing the craters, it makes for good fun.

There's just an acre of you fellas, isn't there?

If the goal is to force enemy movement, what about an improvement on the old Whirlwind minefield option?

Perhaps make it more dangerous so in most situations avoiding it is a smarter choice.

Thanks

I just wanted to see if it could be done because that would make for an more interesting and realistic game because the terrain does change over the course of a battle.

Then just stick a crater where it hit...

Impassable doesn't make much sense...

impassible. LOL.

I'm just imagining the look on my opponent face when I bring 3 manticores and, with 9 shots at the top of turn 1, make him totally incapable of leaving his deployment zone without skimmers.

In any case, if there were a rule like this, it would drastically increase the cost of the vehicle, making them less worth taking (250 points for a AV12-10-10 vehicle...?)

Well the fact that it is in reality a terrain changer there should be a way it interacts with the rest of the game... therefore changing gameplay....

I could be just going on because it would be a badass strategy.... but then again it would be just like pinning down an enemy with say a bunch of mortars...

I like the concept. I agree to make it dangerous terrain or difficult terrain. I like the idea of creating and destroying an environment around you. I have played where we got rid of woods and brush with flamers.

Well, in old rules (it may have been an optional rule, I forget), an ordinance attack would leave a crater behind, that counted as difficult terrain.

It does kinda wreck the game if enough ordnance guns are on the table as you quickly end up with huge portions of the board being difficult terrain. I can't imagine making it cause impassable terrain. That would just be nuts.

And, I never really liked the crater idea anyway. I figure anything that can make a giant crater would easily kill anyone caught in that blast zone. Because of the limited killing potential of even ordinance guns, it felt... off.
