So I have a hive tyrant with a pair scything talons and a venom cannon, and I feel he's just not effective enough. Now, the scything talons are super glued on and not moving, but I can rip the venom cannon off.

So my question is what non-flyrant build is best and what biomorphs and psychic powers should I take?

There usually is no "best" build.

If you want a really good answer to your question, give people context to answer it.

What list do you use and what opponents are you playing against? That will help people to give you the best advice possible.

Otherwise, you are going to get a bunch of information that may or may not do you any good.

Be specific and you will get better information for your situation.

I most often play against space marines, many different play styles.

My army is made up of warriors (and a prime), genestealers, gaunts, a trygon prime, a venomthrope, zoanthrope, 2 claw fexes and (for now) one hive guard.

I have one tyrant guard.

It sounds like a winged Tyrant might be a good choice for you as the rest of your army is foot bound. The twin devourer winged Flyrant is a great build as it offers anti horde and powerful assault. With a Flyrant, you can infiltrate your stealers and then those two units can hit first and draw the majority of fire. That gives some breathing room for the rest of your army to make it into combat.

Another tactic you may want to try is to take another prime instead of the Tyrant, attach both to the cranifexes and that way give them all a cover save from infantry. The lash whips on the Primes will also allow the Fexes to swing before enemy units which means you will take a lot less damage in return. That frees up points for some more Hive Guard who are vital to a good bug list.

Also, check out the fantastic living Tyranid Tactica thread, that thing is PACKED full of good information on bugs.
