I have seen any posts about OOP models, such as;
What's it name?
What was it?
What can I use it for now?
When was it released?
etc

I suggest we make an OOP catalogue of models (doesn't even have to be just GW) so members and visitors can go and easily look up anf find OOP models and all the relevant details including what to field them as in the current edition.

Is there a place in the Article section of dakka where we can have an easy to find place to put this catalogue? and so those that wish to help, feel free to post links to sites with heaps of OOP models or build/add to the catalogue in the Article section which I will link up if I can find a good place to put it for all. Unless someone starts it before me, then post a link in here for me and other to look st/add/etc.

What say you?

The Catalog is now up and needs to be filled

I am just building the frame right now, and it will take me some time. I'll start adding models after most of the frame is built, but feel free to add models to the catalog now, please read the format on the front page.

It's not quite the same, what you're proposing would require a wiki with pictures of each model and then tags so someone could search by them but Stuff of Legends is a great resource.

It could even be done with our gallery. Create a tag - GW Index and start uploading shots with lots of tags per model.

If you want to spend the time I can send you some OOP GW catalogs I have kicking around, so yo ucan scan them (as long as you send them back).

I think the oldest one I still have is 1997, and the newest one is 2006.

Again Stuff of Legends has already done that. An eager beaver could spend time cropping the pages to have individual shots of all the old models but it would be someone with a lot more time than me.

SoL is good, except its search function blows hard...

There is a wiki out there called collecting citadel miniatures.

Stunties.com has an index by manufacturer of every dwarf figure ever made.

Colonel Marbles has a nice listing of figures by manufacturer for comparison, but it doesnt try to show all of the figures.

The Citadel collectors wiki is often my first stop so highly recommended alongside SOL.

http://www.collecting-citadel-miniatures.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

SOL hasn't been updated for a long time and has several gaps and the Citadel Collectors is quite specialised in places rather than offering broad coverage.

The index I use is:

www.zinndex.de

It is quite comprehensive and even lists Rackham and other OOP ranges.

Please get behind this.

What's your plan, for people just to add OOP pictures of their own collections or to scan in catalogues to try and build up a complete collection of miniatures? The former is little use as a guide to models, but the latter will take a lot of time and a fair chunk of space in the Dakka galleries, are the Admin happy with that?

Latter, logged in some form of order (can't think whether chronological or by alphabetical [name]). Im after a complete (as can be) and comprehensive catalog as listed at the start.

Legoburner has give me the go to start it in the article section and as it grows, he may tidy it up with some extra code.

I have a format for adding model(s) in and need to figure out ordering of models withing each catalog.

That is not true. SoL has started it but they are still lacking many years and catalogues. But I agree that it is a more systematic approach than the one currently planned (which is just lumpng all models together).

Chronological is of more use I think, as long as there's an index to let you find all Space Marines or all Orcs, etc. I have the 1984, 1989 and 1996 catalogues. A lot of things appear across several catalogues, and some things appear in a lesser or greater form in different catalogues, for instance the multi-part greater daemons had many more optional parts when first released, but later catalogues only showed a smaller selection of bits, conversely other models had alternate parts added in at a later date.

I think the first thing to do is see how many catalogues people can contribute material from.

Agreed.

Im happy to receive scans of catalogs or something and I can crop each single model, find what details I can on the model and added it to the catalog.

The catalog is ordered like this
Manufacturer > Game System > Race > Time > Model
EG GW > 40k > Eldar > 1990 > Farseer

With the exception of Space marines who also get chapter between race and time.

While I really like the idea of this and will definitely help contribute with pics of my OOP minis, including scans of catalogs is problematic.

The thing is, catalogs, even those that are long since OOP are still copyrighted by the companies that created them. So by making a scan of a catalog page and then hosting it here on Dakka, we are potentially breaching their copyright and there will always be the very real possibility that a company (let's be honest, probably GW) could ask to have all such images removed from the site, and I would have to comply.

I'm not exactly sure how 'stuff of legends' or any other similar site gets away with it, perhaps they're just hoping they never get a cease-and-desist notice...but ultimately it doesn't really matter.

At the end of the day I'd hate for us to spend all kinds of time creating this thing and then have to pull all the images effectively rendering it useless.

So if you really want to proceed with this I think you're going to have to stick to user submitted pictures...not ideal I know, but I still think it could end up being a worthwhile project to attempt.

Yes, After a lengthy discussion with those near the top of GW in Oz, they wished me the best of luck and admire my reasoning but as they dont own all the IP associated with each catalog, unless they themselves were compiling an OOP catalog, we/I cannot use any imagery from the catalogs or website. Plus to police it all would be a nightmare for them.

Totally understandable and reasonable and like you said while not ideal, its the bast we have and i'm happy to do it that way.

Now I call out to any and everyone with OOP models to take a pic and post it here for the Catalog.
