Situation #1
A Shas'O has two drones. He gets shot up and loses the two drones. Fails morale & Falls Back!. Next Turn, meeting the requirement that he's away from an enemy >6", and being and IC ...
Q1: Can he rally without the Bonding Knife?

Single Crisis Suit has 2 drones. As above, he gets shot up and loses both drones. Fails Morale & Falls Back! Next Turn, meeting the requirement that he's away from an enemy >6", and being a unit that can be deployed/taken as a single model ...

1) RaW, maybe. Technically the drones form a retinue, so he becomes an IC with a unit strength of 1/1, though you can argue that they are not a retinue, so he has a unit strength of 1/3 and so cannot regroup.

2) 110% no, as he is not an Independent Character.

1 - attached/stuck with/adhered to HQ. And he's stuck with them until they're dead. Correct?
2 - Does not occupy a FoC slot

Since we don't play 4th ed, this is irrelevant.

In 5th edition, a Retinue is a unit that an IC is attached to and cannot leave during the course of the game.

Drones fit that description perfectly, unless you want to argue that the Commander can leave his drones...

Ah, I forgot 5e still does have a retinue section ... headache left over from 4e codexes ....

I would call it as "discuss with your opponent and mutually agree".

For what it's worth, tau have it hard enough, so I would let him try and regroup out of pity.

He can regroup AFAIC.

I feel like playing devils advocate on this one

1. Is he a retinue? He can still join other units while he has his drones. Retinue's restrict this ability.

2. The rule isn't half models (as it is for the cause of his fleeing which is 25% of models lost) it's half strength. The drones are model but they are also wargear of the (i assume montat) so are they not just part of his own strenght? the unit may not be down any strength since the controller is still there.

Yes i know i just made two opposing arguments...but this has confused me.

The argument against "retinue" is he retains the IC rule, which in a retinue you explicitly lose.

In the Tau Codex on page 31 it states that if the drone controller is an IC then they are a unit, but that unit can still independently join other units.

I would say that it counts as 1/3 for the match.

As a Tau player I almost hope the Bonding Knife become a standard on all Team Leaders along with photon grenades.

Dont know if this is sarcasm just saying if I buy a sergeant who in a horrible assault army and only gain +1 to LD and +1 to A. Justification. but for 6 points more I should just take a space marine army who get base 4 stats, standard frag and krak grenades, bolt pistol and boltgun allowing them to use the pistol instead RF bolter and then move 6", shoot at unit with pistol and assault. Also 3 armour and they shall know no fear. Just think a bonding knife standard as opposed to "they shall know no fear" and photon grenades since ya know the marines can assault through cover and krak grenade vehicles.
