I am going to a 10000 point game soon. I am thinking about putting a locator beacon on my drop pod so my teammates can deep strike there without any trouble. Is that legit?

It's a team game, so it's not covered by the rules, so you have to make a house rule.

Just for an example, my local group has always ruled that beacons, icons, and anything similar only affect your own army, never teammates.

If you're playing Apocalypse, this is covered on p20 of the Apoc rulebook, 4th paragraph under "Select Teams".

There are two ways to handle team games. You can have each player's army be entirely separate. Or you can rule that anything that effects friendly units affects all the units on that team.

The first is nicely straightforward. The second can be fun but it can also make for bizarre combos and arguments.

Technically any unit can use it, friend or foe. It just states a unit within 6".

Being a Mac user is like being a Navy SEAL: a small, elite group of people with access to the most sophisticated technology in the world, who everyone calls on to get the really tough jobs done quickly and efficiently.

This is incorrect. The rulebook FAQ clarifies that where an item doesn't specify that it works for anyone other than your own models, it only affects your army.

Apocalypse also has a rule that states that an army's special rules apply only to that army, as was mentioned earlier.

Otherwise you get Big mek force fields swamping an entire team's worth of models with cover. Kinda sucks if your team didn't bring one.

When I play 40k with my friends, we typically play it with 2 armies each, split the points more or less in two for 4 groups, and then just assign specific units to each player. For example:

Army A: Space Marines. Player one has a troop of marines, their rhino, a Captain, and a Dreadnought
Army A: Space Marines. Player two has a troop of marines, their rhino, a chaplain, and a squad of terminators.

vs

Army B: Orks. Player three has a squad of boyz, a trukk, a warboss, and a deff dread
Army B: Orks. Player four has a squad of boyz, a trukk, a battelwagon, and Nobz.

It's the easiest way to do it, I think. You're not a separate "team", you're just controlling x units. Any effects that would work on friendly units within x range or whatever take affect just as if it was a single player controlling each army.

I think the issue is for different armies however, eg. "can my buddy deepstrike in his mawloc 6" from my drop pod and not scatter?"
Honestly it's a house rule as said before, as teams aren't discussed in the rulebook. I've played it both ways with some interesting combinations, namely infiltrating SM kavaan Shrike with a brood of 3 nid Carnifices. It gives spice to the game, but just clear it before hand how you want it played.

Yeah, when I play with my friends we don't allow mixed armies - just allocate different units of the same army. I think that, generally speaking, it's going to break down really quickly any other way.
