I went to my FLGS today to have a game. I ended up playing an ork player. I replaced the normal captain with a custom built one, it was completely legal, with a bolter company standard and sword, but then he kicks up a fuss about it being "Too powerful" and it being "Not legal". I thought this was a load of , but I let him have his way with no company standard or sword. I just want to know your opinion, if he was right or i was.

If your family is mad at you, Ogres are the way to go. No one could be mad at Ogres. But if you come out and they demand to know what you're wasting your time on and you hold up a rat, you're not going to make any friends.

England..

Well if your model was completely codex legal (wargear wise) then you had every right to play the custom captain...

I know i have my own custom captain completely codex legal and love playing him...

Can you post a pic of the model in question?

But as stated above if it is codex legal then it is fine. Unless you have modeled an obvious unfair advantage, which I assume isn't the case

Did you pay for the standard/sword? That is the only issue here...

Son can you play me a memory? I'm not really sure how it goes...

Agreed. As long as you've paid the points for the captain and the model looks like it could carry the items there shouldn't be an issue.

That said no one can be forced to play you if they really don't want to face some unit with their army. I'm having a hard time figuring out how replacing the "standard" captain with a finer model could be such a fright though. Bolter, sword, a standard for looks... Hmm.

What Codex were you using might I ask(I cannot think of any Chapters that allow a Captain to carry a Standard)

Also; if you can show your opponent your codex, along with the option's you chose, and why they are legal(generally because you paid the points cost listed and followed the "exchanged this for that"); and they still cry about how the unit is still "too powerful(which a captain with Boltgun and power sword is not)" then tell them to go home and cry about it, and just pack up your models.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.

Look at the models in the Codex, leaders frequently have some sort of banner on them just for show.

Do you mean the banner on the backpack? because if so then it is prefectly legal and has no effect on the game whatsoever apart from making him a bigger target.

Since back banners aren't targetable, it really doesn't.

As already stated, so long as your model is codex legal, you can name/call him whatever you want. I personally run around with a custom built Abby and Kharn cause I hate the current models of them.

Remember, have fun with it and be creative!

I meant as in out of 10 guys he is more of a target than the others... though they can't directly target him... yeah you win

Basically, you can claim a model to have any wargear he's allowed by the codex to have AND have modeled on him already. You cannot claim him to have something if:

1.) he does not possess the actual item on his model (i.e: no claiming his normal bolter is a Plasma Pistol)

2.) Something he has on him that he cannot have by the rules (i.e: giving an Assault Marine a Lascannon).

You're always free to model whatever you want onto your characters, provided that the things he is actually suppose to have is on the Model. One of my Berserkers is holding two Axes and has a pistol holstered on his thighs, but game-wise he count as having only one Close Combat Weapon and a Bolt Pistol (since the pistol is actually on him, and he does have one close combat weapon).

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

I actually do the Same with my Creed and Kell; I like(ish) the Kell model, but cannot stand the Fat Creed, so i built my own all-plastic count-ases.
