I usually see people take sternguard w/ and put them in a droppd, and keep tacticals in the back to hold objectives.
They way I see it, with the ability to take 2 heavy weapons and shoot bolters up to 30", it should be the other way around.

With sternguard scoring and special ammo sitting in a building overlooking a field, I think they work much better as a defensive unit than any normal tactical squad.
Pedro meanwhile can make the tacticals into pesudo chaos marines with an extra attack.

I think 3 or 4+ turns of specail ammo shots, even if it's only 1 shot per model is better than sternguard showing up, shooting once, then dying horribly.

Customers ask me what army I play in 40k. Wrong Question. The only army I've never played is orks.

The entire point of putting Sternguard in drop pods is that you can deliver melta where you need it round one to remove the nasty stuff like leman russ tanks or battlewagons. Sure, the Sternguard will likely die horribly once they're done, but not only do you get to pop one (two if you combat squad) vehicle per sternguard squad, you're then taking fire that would otherwise go into the rest of your army. If they ignore you you mess upp stuff anyway. Tac marines can't do the melta spam as effectively.

For thirteen years I had a dog with fur the darkest black. For thirteen years he was my friend, oh how I want him back.

yeah, Sternguard also have the ability to take 2 special weapons and/or up to 10 combi-weapons.

combat squads allows you to take, say 4 combi-flamers and a flamer in 1 half and 4 combi-meltas and a melta gun in the other. or you can stay in 1 giant squad for utter pwnage.

if you take combi-flamers take 2 Hvy flamers as the regular weapon over the flamers unless your really tight for points.

Uh. Transports can only transport one unit at a time. Drop pods are no different.

if you drop 10 sternguard down in a pod you can combat squad upon landing. this is specifically mentioned in the rules for combat squads.

You cant have 6 sternguard squads. Believe me I would love to do that. You have a max of 3 elites and still need 2 troops. Also on drop pods, you can combat quad once deployed so thats technically 2 units in one pod

Just realized Pedro doesn't make them troops - only scoring. I was all excited about being able to spam missiles better then wolves.
