Erratic Knight Errant

hi guys, so i know how obnoxious it i to get these about once a week, but i don't really know very much about 40K and some help would be greatly appreciated.
I'm looking for an army that isn't really concerned with Close Combat and runs around and shoots. However i don't want an army with a ton of tanks. i would actually prefer to go almost completely with infantry but a tank or two would be okay.
I was thinking either tau or imperial guard, but i heard tau was difficult to play with (especially for a beginner) without an updated codex and Imperial guard have a poor battalion (from what I've read online) not in love with the sentinel model either.
Thoughts?
Thanks

Imperial guard.
You can have 1 or 2 tanks and then just have infantry if you want. It doesn't even have to be a lot of infantry (but it helps).

Sounds like the Guard is right for you! But you might also give Eldar a closer look.

Well in regards to the eldar i don't like the whole "elf" fluff, and from what I've seen they are elves.
How should i go about building a guard army, (remembering that i hate the sentinel model...unless you guys convince me that it's too awesome not to take).
Thanks for the quick replies.

Necrons may be worth looking into. They are pretty durable, and have some decent shooting ability with infantry. However, they are in need of an update.

From my personnal experiencer of being shot at by guard, I can appreciate the vendetta gunships. Nothing like having a bunch of elites in a plane w/ 3 twin-linked lascannons, scout move on you, blow your stuff up on turn one and then disembark squads of dudes that also blow your stuff up. If you want a shooty army that isn't concerned with close combat and you don't want many vehicles (for reasons I am confused of) than think about Tau. They might be a little difficult to grasp, but they shoot ALOT, and they get slaughtered in close combat, and you don't need vehicles (again vehicles are suggested, they tend to make your guys die a little less). See, win/win/win situation, sorta.
