Several years ago, GW released a $200 or so, big-box of tau. It included a LE ethereal, with an attachment of ... spines? to the model's back. Okay, so, I just stored it, thinking it might be of some worth $10 or so a few years down the road. Worth a blister or a 6-pack o' beer.

Low and behold, an ebay SEARCH comes up with them listed at $40+.

Considering the game mechanics make the model a detriment to use ...
WTF?

Anyone knowledgable about the amount of these things in release? Can this thing really be going for that? The auctions are the 14 day variety, so I'm going to have to wait a bit to see if it actually sells for that. In the meantime, there's this vast source of information called the 'Net ...

Yes, it can really be going for that. It's not only an OOP model, but also a model that only came in an expensive battleforce box.

Yup, the army boxe limited models, regardless of their tactical worth, generally go for $40 and up.

I sold mine several years ago. I think I got about £12 for it.

I prefer the 3rd edition Ethereal models anyway, they don't look like Emperor Ming of Mongo, and I already had a couple of them which is all you ever need.

You don't mean this fellow here, do you?

I believe the codex calls him an etheral w/ honor blade and drone controller.

Yep, that is exactly the culprit. The thing is, how much longer does one hold onto the little blighter, before GW reprints/issues him and his value goes down?

If they reprint him it will be done to celebrate the next Tau codex, so you probably ave 12 to 18 months.

There are no real guarantees with GW's 'Limited Editions'... they do have a habit of re-releasing them from time to time... but the army box models do seem to be 'safer' than many of their other 'limited' releases.

So far as I'm aware, the only Army Box model that has ever been re-'printed' is the original Black Templars Marshal, which was eventually sold in several different box sets and finally released in a standard blister alongside the regular Marine Captain during 4th edition.

Insaniak; that one wasn't even in an Army Box(or at least not originally) It first showed up in the 3rd edition Boxed set(the one with BT on the cover, came with Ruins, Jungle trees, the battlefield accessories, a squad of Marines, a Squad of Dark eldar warriors, and a Land speeder)
Box cover:
Came with a Combi melta originally; then was re-released as an army Bow ltd edition with the storm bolter, then was re-released as a general model I believe with several gun options. He is no longer available.

Here is the original

The BT Box Variant had either a Storm bolter or a regular bolter, and I think the bilster Variant had all three guns.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.

In between the BT box and the general release, he was also available in the limited edition 'Heroes of the Adeptus Astartes' box.
