hallo all

a couple days ago a friend of mine, who plays tyranids played a game on static table that is supposed to look like a desert, with a lot of ruins scattered all over it. when i saw that i suddenly thought that it whould be really cool to have desert nids: tyranids that are hiding under the sand untill somebody passes by and then suddenly jump out of the sand and kill him. my idea was to make a tyranid army with sand on the bases, with a bit of sand randomly on their body (not on the carapace, because if they jump out of the sand that will be the first place the sand will slide off from). and also to have a very thin piece of iron wire and cover it in a thin layer of wood glue, then put modelling sand on it. this will/should look like sand falling off the nids body. now i whould like to know: has anyone done this before? if yes: a few tips with painting/applying the sand? and do you have any pictures of it? if not: what do you think of the idea? i will finish my ork trukks first, after that i will buy a box of warriors and try this out.

I'm not sure how you could make it look like the sand was falling off each nid...maybe a few of the main models but to do for each model is a project you will never finish

dont stick sand to the nids!!!
creatures that move through sand will figure out a way so it wont stick to them!

i would paint the carapace in a sand cammo color, and make the skin look very interesting so it wont be a boring army to look at!

I think a scheme like this would look awesome for a desert themed army:

I'm not sure how you could make it look like they're rising from the sand. Certainly not gluing sand to the models themselves. I guess what I'm thinking of is a sheet of sand falling from the claws of a ravener, but I can't think of a way that isn't just going to look like solid block of sand rather than a dynamic sheet of sand.

I ended up doing sand colored nids.....

I haven't got any pictures at the ready, so i'll igve you a rundown of the colors:
-Graveyard earth with commando khaki highlight for skin tones
-Scorched brown for the fleshy things in between
-and armor plates are snakebite leather with vomit brown highlight

teeth are yellowed, talons are same color as armor plate.

It doesn't matter how bloody far the apple falls from the tree. If the apple fell off of a Granny Smith, that apple is going to grow into a Granny bloody Smith. The only difference is whether that apple grows in the shade of the tree it fell from.

The 'leaping out of the sand' look might suit a lictor, which really does fight like that.

Yeah, I think it'd look a bit out of place to have every single model leaping out from the sand, but a couple of Raveners, a Trygon, maybe the odd Gaunt, I think that'd look kinda cool if you could actually pull it off.
