I want to get some salamanders space marines but I can't think of any background for a cool successor chapter. I want to stick mostly to the salamanders paint scheme but not exactly the same.
Any ideas?

If you can't think of any backgroud for a cool successor youre in the same boat as GW.
Maybe just do a Salamander army ?
The paint scheme isn't that set in stone so you could have your own.
Back in the days of codex armageddon even GW had problems answering how to paint sallies correctly....

I had a quick look on Wikipedia for inspiration...
The two things that stand out in mythology are the idea that Salamanders were created from fire. This is covered in the standard Salamanders fluff. Also is an exaggeration of their real life regenerative capabilities. I would recommend pumping this up by including numerous Command Squads with Apothcaries in. Shame you can't buy Apothecaries as standard, like you can Sanguinary Guards for Blood Angels. Maybe some opponents would be willing to discuss this. You could consider Axolotl Salamanders, and their Mexican origins, as a potential source of inspiration, either Wild West Vaqueros, or Incan stuff, perhaps.
As for a colour scheme, there are Red Back Salamanders. You could have a fairly standard colour scheme, but with red power packs.
Axolotls have nothing to do with Red Backs, but I am sure you could come up with something.

Oh, plus a cool Coat of Arms to base your Chapter logo on.

I liked this idea enough to throw together a quick test on an EBay Marine.

I'm have been contemplating this exact same thing for a while, and the direction I have started to go into has to do with Vulkan, his mysterious disappearance and possibly founding a (secret) successor chaptor somewhere else in the galaxy (or beyond) using Salamander gene-seed. It can possibly be linked to some of the artifacts the Salamanders are searching for.
For example a successor chapter could have been created to aid Vulkan on his quest/whatever he is/has been doing, or to guard one of the ancient Salamander relics at wherever they are. Since they wouldn't be from Nocturne/Prometheus their skin wouldn't be jet black obviously, but some of the Sternguard, Terminators or other veterans (Vulkan could have taken some of his pals with him back in the day, secretly) could. While painting the army I might mix it up a little and some of the vets get jet black skin and others don't.
The Salamanders way of going about and their values can also be mixed with some other themes (the values/ways of the new recruits and wherever they came from). This also explains other color themes possibly mixed with Salamander greens.
Basically you could do whatever you like. I plan on incorporating a knight theme into my army. Imagine Space knights with (similar to) Buddhist beliefs and a pride in forging the weapons the Salamanders classicly forge with a passion.
Of course the "regular" Salamanders chapter knows nothing of all of this and they will probably throw a hissy fit when first finding out (because Salamanders not recruited from Nocturne would undoubtedly turn their world of pride upside down), but hey, if the Primarch founded them they'll have to accept it eventually.
These are some of my silly ideas, but the great thing about 40K is that you can do whatever your imagination comes up with as long as you make sure your miniatures are represented in accordance with the rules.

I thought of one, though it is pretty rubbish: The swords of the forge. They have the standard paint scheme, except they have one completely yellow/orange/fiery colour shoulder pad, and some of the more important characters/command etc have crests of flame on their heads, which could be sculpted with GS and some sergeants and devastators have hoods with fire running up them. It ain't fantastic, but it sticks with the Salamanders fiery/arterficer theme.
Any thoughts?

There's nothing wrong with it; if that's what you like the sound of, then you should by all means use it.

True. The more I think about it, the better it sounds. If I do do it, i might get rid of the red shoulder pad and replace it with Blazing orange rims for both the shoulder pad
For Vulkan!

I like it, except I'd shorten to the Forge Swords instead of Swords of the Forge.
If you are going for an orange shoulder though, why not make the rest of the arm entirely orange as well? Or how about one arm and shoulder pad that blends from yellow to red, like a flame?
Not rubbish at all.

Hmmmmm.... I think I reconise that. I'll check on Lexicanium, although I quite like swords of the forge , as there are too many 'Sons of' chapters.

Sounds good, although I'd like to stick with Swords of the forge' as I think it sounds cool. I like the paint ideas, but if I did that, i'd need to get some orange on the head too to tie it together, in my opinion.

Hmmm.....
I'll have a think about that, and post my ideas later, but my idea was lots of tanks and techmarines, and an entire company dedicated to being an armoured spearhead.
