I know this might not be the only case but...

Scimitar of the Sun Resplendent - The wielder of this blade has +2 attacks - 50 Points - Lizardman Codex

Sword of Strife - The wielder of the Sword of Strife has +2 attacks - 40 Points - BRB

So the rule states you must use your army book if the item appears in both. This is clearly not the same item (name wise) ... How would you feel about this, this can't be the only example either.

2,500 - Discipline. Duty. Unyielding Will.
2,000 - He alone has the Emperor's soul in his blood.
2,500 - Order. Unity. Obedience.

Oh it's legal, my lizards use both the Sword of The Hornet and the Sword of Swift Slaying regularly

Just because two things have the same effects does not make them the same. Plenty of other armies have simmilar things.

As above. Your only requirement is to use common item points values from your book, if they are in there. Scimitar isnt a common magic item, so the rules dont apply to it - and it also ISNT the same item in any case.

Thanks guys. I figured as much. I just wanted to be sure so I wouldn't be "that guy."

I imagine alot of these discrepancies will be fixed when each book gets its 8th Ed release, but that could be a while.

Certain magics are more common for some races than others.

I agree I don't see all the armies getting new books before there's a 9th edition.

2000pts of beasty boys
1000pt rat pack - Clan Cozen
1000pt Savage Waagh
1500pt
(coming soon)

It depends.

For 5th ed 40k they made a public statement that they considered the ruleset "good enough" that they wouldnt need to refresh it before all codexes have had a redux for 5th ed. They may decide the same about 8th - certainly it has addressed some of the major balancing issues of 7th ed (no longer monster-cav spam FTW) and made it a game where core infantry can actually play a useful role. Well, more useful than "sit in the corner and gain 100VP for a quarter" at least.
