Subject: Protectorate Mercenaries?

Hey all! I just started playing, have a few skirmish victories under my belt, and I was thinking about expanding my army.
I have a Menoth BG box, a choir, a vassal, and a vigilant.
I really like the look of the mercenary models, and kinda wanted to supplement from that group. Also, I am completely lacking ranged weapons.
Are there any Protectorate friendly Mercenaries that would be effective ranged units I can add to my army?
Can choirs pump mercenary figures in my force?

No. Choir reads "Friendly Faction warjacks."

If you're looking for solos, eEiryss is definitely first on the list. Versh is amazing, but right off hand I can't recall if he works for Menoth. Kell has Dual Shot and Sniper so he plinks infatry pretty well. Ghorman is more support than true ranged, but he's never a bad choice.
As far as units, Cylena and the Nyss hunters are pretty solid, but I'm not 100% if they work for menoth.
Incidentally, the Choir is "friendly faction", so it can't work on merc jacks.

Steelhead rifleman are really the only ranged unit choice that work for menoth other than Hearnne and Johnne and Sam and the devil dogs. Neither of which is probably what you are looking for. The rifleman are fairly accurate because they can reroll missed attacks, only 10" range and no way to extend it though.

Thanks for the tips! I'm putting eiryss on my wish list.
Also, I love the look of their warjacks, but if they are untouchable by my choir, is it worth fielding them?
A buddy of mine plays Khador, and he tears me up with that bombard cannon... Can the Mercs get me anything like that?

I don't believe you can take any Merc `Jack in a non-Merc army. At least not any way I know of.

Well, you can. You just either have to field 100 points (and take a Merc caster as your second) or field a merc 'Jack marshal, like the Devil Dogs or Rutger Shaw.
A buddy of mine plays Khador, and he tears me up with that bombard cannon... Can the Mercs get me anything like that?
You'd probably be looking at the Mariner or Mule. Both have great AoE capabilities, although the Mariner features a much higher range. If you want to field one outside of 100 points, your choices are Rutger Shaw, Dirty Meg, or the Devil Dogs for marshals.

I'm really excited by the idea of a mercenary 'jack marshall, but I'm not too clear on how that works.
Is the jack marshall liek a second mini warcaster? Do they get abilities and focus? if they are killed, so I lose the 'jacks too?
I think Eiryss is the right choice for me, BTW, thanks!
The steelhead riflemen look like just what I want as well, but I'll hold off until our games include more infantry.
Right now, my buddy exclusively uses khadoran heavy warjacks, so perhaps I can flank his line with eiryss to disable sorcha?
Would the sea devils be able to take down a khadoran heavy? Are there any infantry (between menoth and mercs) that can make a dent in that kind of armor, or am I best off avoiding them?

A `Jack Marshal is not a caster, and does not have any Focus, but they will let the `Jack Charge or Boost a single roll, as if it had been given one Focus. `Jack Marshals are also one of my favorite thing to see across the table from my Machine Wraiths.

^Agreed. Machine Wraiths are pretty underrated IMO.
As for the OP, all I hear about is the Piper of Menoth .

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Sp4m what you really want are menoth jacks like vanquisher, redeemer and reckoner. Thats about all the long range you need. If you got zealots and monolith bearer they might be decent, but I haven't tried them in MKII format yet. Get yourself a revenger, and use the arc node to get spells in your friends faces.
Here's an old school combo
Kreoss + Eiryss + Redeemer & Choir. aka pop n drop. Try that, or get the models and then try that. Expand from there. I've heard that exemplar errants are decent shooty, (cross bow swordmaster guys) or Croe's cuthroats aren't horrid (mercs) but I was never excited by them.

I've got the revenger, Eiryss will be in my next order, and I would love the Redeemer, but it's inaccurate. That would make it pretty hard to hurt a caster with it, wouldn't it?
can you spell out the synergy between those units?
What I see is eiryss flanks the caster, and drops their focus, and prevents focus regen, Kreoss buffs the redeemer's toughness, Choir boosts attack and damage.
The Redeemer has a ROF of 3, so maybe that's really good?

Knocked Down does not equal Autohit with shooting, it equals Def5. You can still miss, it's just not very likely.

Eloquently put Retrias :-)
Lets not forget. Kreos activates, casts that dispel spell, then pops feat. Eiryss moves in and plinks away all that nasty focus, the a choir member sings the damage song, then... that redeemer rockets drops 3 bombs, (need to remember, you can still miss on snake eyes, and if they have cover or concealment or something else to boost def, you might need a decent roll still!)

Yea, but that directly relates to: Popping the feat. Dropping the caster. Not all casters have a feat that directly accomplishes the above literally.
