I've got a duel sized Menoth force, and I thought it would be fun to get a second caster so I can try some different play styles.

Can I get a mercenary warcaster, and use my Menoth units?

Well, sort of. But only in 100 points, and you still have to field a Menite warcaster. Also note any "friendly faction" restrictions that the Merc might feature.

You could play Ashlynn and the collect some of the Cygnar stuff she can use.

Or play magnus and use a unit of idrians...

That is the only menoth unit used in a merc-contract as far as I know..

That does raise a question... How do Mercs play?

I chose Menoth because I thought it would be fun to make tactical choices every turn, trading off between defensive and offensive buffs, and I thought it was cool that I had these fragile support units hidden behind my 'jacks. I was pretty much right, but that bombard cannon ignores models for blocking LoS...

What playstyle describes Mercs?

If you're still pretty new, forget switching factions. They all play differently enough that it'll almost be like starting over on the learning curve. I've seen one of our local players go thru four factions in less than a year, and he's never gotten good at any of them because of it so loses constantly and gets really frustrated.

The Menoth are IMHO one of the best factions, or at least the best one at handing me my arse on a platter. It doesn't matter what faction you play, what tactics you use, there will always be a proverbial "bombard cannon" that counters it. You just need to learn what they are, and how to adapt and deal with them.

This dismayed by a bombard? If you ever see the Strike Force you might just quit.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Menoth are weak without the correct blessings. Menoth have a poorer statline but better spells, taking away a Menite warcaster is taking away one of your precious sources of such spells.
Just dont do it.

Using a mercenary caster with a large Cygnar or Khador army is a far better idea.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

Thank you for the advice! It's not that the bombard cannon has me discouraged... I'm sure one eiryss, or a unit of daughters can cause sufficient distraction to break his line. But I LOVE the steampunk look of the Rhulic Mercs. I was thinking, if I grew my Menoth force with Mercs, then I could get a rhulic caster, and I could either have a skirmish sized force of menoth and mercs, or two duel sized forces, for introducing friends to the game, or play variation.

I think i'll just keep things simple for now... finish my choir, get eiryss.

Fielding Rhulic warjacks is even trickier for the Protectorate. Only Durgen Madhammer will work for them out of the Rhulic casters, and no Rhulic Marshals will work for them. So yeah, your only option there is either 100+ point games (which, admittedly, are a lot of fun) or to field an all-Rhul army (which can also be a lot of fun).
