Hey there, I'm looking to get into fantasy - my younger bro collects lizardmen, and I'm looking to pick up an army. I like Vampire Counts, but I am wondering if they are a decent army, and if so, what sort of units to buy? I don't want to end up spending $500 only to find 2/3 of it is rubbish.
The only other army I like the feel of is Daemons of Chaos, but are they useful in 8th? Again, what units are worth the time of day?
Cheers

For a starter army I suggest something with a lot of versitiliy, an army that will let play with a bit of everything. Empire is a greater starter army you can literally do everything with it. Daemons of Chaos and VC I find very boring to play. I tell people the best way to pick an army is to read some fluff find out how to armies work and see if that appeals to you. Daemons and VC are both very heavy melee armies VC more so then Daemons, both have cool characters and both can be magic heavy. If thats what appeals to you then go for it, however like I said you wont fully get to grasp of all the phases of the game.

Getting vampire counts as your first army is really diving in at the deep end. I personally started with Lizardmen, then moved on to Orcs & Goblins, Skaven and then Vampire Counts. Start with something easy to use, such as Empire or the High Elves. if you want to go evil, start with Warriors of Chaos, Beastmen or a personal favourite, Skaven

I know Vampire Counts is jumping in the deep end game wise, I just like the look of the army etc.
I like most of WOC, apart from the warriors themselves, who I feel look a generation of modeling behind, so they are off the list.
Daemons is tempting simply due to the ability to use it in 40k.
The other army that used to hold my interest was Dark Elves, but I am less than certain these days. Though they do have some lovely models.
If I was to look at Vampire Counts, what is a good small force to start off with>?

My buddy took up daemons and has played 2 games at low points 1k and 1250 and spanked my Ogres and also the GW manager's Beastmen hard, he had us both wiped by the 2nd turn. But without a battalion they are expensive.
WOC is a great choice, their Battalion is probably the 2nd best value next to Ogres due to the diversity of the ogre body to be 1 of 3 different choices. A battalion and a hero is a great starter might be able to get 1k out of it with another box of warriors or marauders, 2 battalions a couple heros and maybe 1-2 boxes would be a great start.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd
