Hi I've got a Tomb Kings battalion painted with a Tomb King/Prince on foot, I've been reading through the army book and considering the new rules as well. I've come up with what I think is a competitive list that will do for most pitched battles, which is what I play. Here's my army list, any improvements/ critisisms are welcomed but don't be too unkind

1x Tomb King- Shield, Sword of Strife, Armour of Ages, Collar of Shapesh- 270pts
1x Icon Bearer- Battle Standard Bearer, Icon of Rakaph- 105pts
1x Hierophant- Cloak of the Dunes, Neferra's Plaques of Mighty Incantations- 165pts
1x Liche Priest- Brooch of the Great Desert, Skeletal Steed- 148pts
20x Skeletons- Spears, Shields, Light Armour, Full Command- 225pts
12x Skeletons- Bows, Full Command- 121pts
11x Light Horsemen- Full Command- 189pts
3x Chariots- Full Command- 170pts
15x Tomb Guard- Full Command, Banner of the Undying Legion- 235pts
3x Ushabti- 195pts
1x Tomb Scorpion- 85pts
2x Tomb Swarms- 90pts

Total Points- 1998 pts

I have not played the game mutch, butr here is some pice of advice:

Your units will strike last.
Your units will crumble a lott.

I would ditch the full command on the craiots, use them as living artilary, there is no way they wills urvive many rounds of combat unless you get a flank attack, and even then you will probably lose them to steadfast crumble in the second round of combat.

Chariots and light horsemenn are good for hunting warmachines.

The 3 packs of skeletons, the Tomb Guards and the ushapti needs to be bigger or they will crumble fast.

Unless you take a "2 prince block" with a full command in a unit five wide you should not have the standar bearer in the army. He will die fast. Also, ditch the skeletal steed in the liche priest, you need to give him a look out sir. I am also not shure what that cloak is doing on the other lich priest. Mobilaty would be nice since you are streaching so far, but you are also streaching very thing so there is realy not a lott he can do with his magic.

In short: ditch command on chariots, standar bearerm horse on lich priest, cloak of dunes, one of the skeleton units to beef one of the other units. And good luck.

Also, since TK is sutch an alien race to play you can come over here for better advice: http://tomb-kings.net/index.php?

In short, dakka does not give very good TK advice because the high point cost and the special rules are not something that laymen know anything about. Dakka is good on genreal stuff, but not TK.

thanks alot the cloak of the dunes lets you fly so im going to keep that for the hierophant, point taken about the "look out sir" and I agree command is pricey for chariots, I wanted a killer unit with the tomb guard, king and standard, I still think he's worth including, but that's my personal opinion. I completely agree the skeleton units need bumping up. Thanks

One thing i will warn you about, players targeting your movement incantation every single magic phase to prevent your army from keeping mobile, and they will also try and cancel your shooting/attack incantation aswell when it is pertinent, with the magic rules in 8th, the chances of the opponent getting more dispell dice then your incantation dice is higher then before.

its one of the most painful lessons to learn, but its a flaw with the current book, with a decent amount of dispell dice, the tomb kings can be stalled.

In the Emperor's Name, Burn the Heretic, Cleanse the Unclean.

Yeah I know what the cloak does.

The only thing is that you do not wanne jump from units of 15 to units of 15, if they get shot at or charged the hirphant will die. And you wo not want to have him standing besides the unit because of the reduced look out sir roll. You want him in a big unit. And getting bigger units means getting lesser units witch pushes your army to have less units to jump around rending the cloak absolete.

Note that the hirphant dying is not so bad if your king is around and he gives out the leadership boost.

TK armies pushes into one of 2 categories as far as I can se: One is an elite melle unit, compact and cheating with incatations, or a ranged one with a casket and 2 catapults, getting 4 shots a turn with incatattions. This last one will probably use Queen Kalida. at 2500 you might also se setra, with use a throw away chariots, and huge squads of tomb guards. Mind you I am new so I could be wrong and disruption elements like chariot, tomb swarms and scorpions will always be important to deal with caster/warmachines/fleeing units etc.

I like the idea of the list though, dont get me wrong. It gott a lott of goodies, but with the big point costs and the low inisiative we need yp yighten up.

Well Tomb Kings was my first army as well, I jumped ship too after a few games. I found they were just in too dire need of a codex update to really have fun with yet alone actually winning. But they can be decent if you make a decent list and play it well. Dont let the community make you change armies
