Subject: 1750pts mech Eldar - friendly(ish) tournament
|

Just been writing up a list for a tournament I'm going to soon, and thought I might as well post it here and see what the dakka community at large thinks of it! =) Any comments are welcome, though I can't promise I'll take suggestions on board Farseer with Doom, Runes of Warding Autarch with Power Weapon, Mandiblasters, Avenger Shuriken Catapult 5 Fire Dragons mounted in a Wave Serpent with twin-linked ShuriCans and Spirit Stones 5 Howling Banshees, 1 Exarch with Mirrorswords and Acrobatic 5 Striking Scorpions, 1 Exarch with Shadowstrike 9 Dire Avengers, 1 Exarch with Power Weapon & Shimmershield, Defend, Bladestorm. Mounted in a Wave Serpent with twin-linked ShuriCans and Spirit Stones 9 Dire Avengers, 1 Exarch with dual Avenger Shuriken Catapults, Bladestorm. Mounted in a Wave Serpent with twin-linked Bright Lances and Spirit Stones 5 Pathfinders 5 Warp Spiders, 1 Exarch with dual Death Spinners Falcon with Scatter Laser, ShuriCan, Spirit Stones Fire Prism Leaves me 4pts, which I can't really do anything with except get a Singing Spear, and I'm really not a fan. Give me my Witch Blade any day! =) So yeah, there we go. Don't be too harsh I'm not aiming for this to be a WAAC list, rather something that gives me a chance and lets me have some fun as well.

The Banshees have no transport? They die.....i would have thought, i know you have 5 fast tanks on the bored, that will be a more immediate threat, but 5 out in the open, even in cover, have no chance of making it to the enemy... :(
Maybe take out the banshees, to add to the scorpions squad?
I also think, that when you have a falcon, the Fire Dragons should be in their, but thats just my opinion. (and give scorpians the serpent, leaving the option for them to start on the bored as well...)
And, i know some people think pathfinders should not be in a mech list, so you could always swap them for another fire prism
(I know you don't want a waac, which the advice i have given you probably doesn't take you their, i'm an not an Eldar expert at all, but i think it would help, as the 5 banshees, and probably/possibley the 5 pathfinders, maybe even the warp spiders are a waste...)
(p.s warp spiders, swapped out for jetbikes if you need extra troops... )
Might as well add a rough list...
Farseer
Autarch
5 Fire dragons
7/8 scorpians (with exarch) in wave serpent
10 D.avengers in wave serpent (with exarch)
10 D.avengers in wave serpent (with Exarch)
bikes......
Falcon (with fire dragons inside)
Fire Prism
Fire Prism....
I think that is probably more competitive, and could probably annoy your opponents a bit, but hopefully still be fun
(well i think its fun having lots of tanks flying around....)

The Banshees go in the Falcon =) I really need to scrape together enough money for a fourth Serpent. Similarly, I'd love to follow you and put a second Fire Prism in, but again I've only got the one, and can't really afford to go and get another one. Being self-employed really doesn't earn as much as you'd think I might try the Dragons in the Falcon instead, that never really occurred to me. I've been running them in the Serpent for so long that it's natural force of habit now to put in 5 Dragons in a Serpent without even thinking about it! =P I wholeheartedly agree that jetbikes would be a major help, but I don't actually have any. Still waiting for the DE ones to convert them.... Thank you for your advice though =) Moved a few things around in the list, and I'm just fiddling around to try and get another Scorpion or two in there.

Definitely need to run 2 prisms so you can combine the beams, otherwise much less effective. I would drop the scorpions personally and add to the banshees and put them in a transport. Counter attacking with power weapons is pretty win. Idk what you want to do with the pathfinders I could only see them used to camp an objective.

Yes, yes I am. What gave it away - the Eldar obsession or the picture of my Dire Avenger? *gasp* I'm revealing my tactics to the enemy! Delete thread! Delete! Delete! Again, sadly a second Prism isn't an option for me right now given the finance situation. I might leave the Scorpions at home, I've just found them useful either for taking out camping units or forcing the enemy to divert some units to deal with them... Yep, I do love Banshees with Acrobatic. The Pathfinders will be sitting on an objective, just to free up the Avengers to fly around doing what they do best =)

I am in the same boat financially, thats why instead of purchasing stuff I just make from scratch vehicles to scale of regular vehicles. Also gonna start hitting up ebay for cheap stuff. good luck at your tournament.

Farseer: Give him another power, dual runes, and stones. You're at 1750, splurge a bit on Eldar's best HQ choice. I'd actually recommend Eldrad at this point level, but he isn't required.
Autarch: Meh. Who is he going to be hanging out with? I think he works best as part of the Farseer/Warlock squad, but you aren't taking that.
Dragons: Excellent! But, where's their WS?
Banshees: A mediocre choice. They simply don't work all that well, especially in a squad this small. A squad of 10 is ideal, but 7 or 8 is a minimum. They need a WS and because it's not an assault vehicle, you'll find them useless in many games. They're not an ideal squad, but that's ok for a more fun list
Scorpions: I'd typically call them better than Banshees, but with FnP spam, I'd go with Banshees. Drop these guys.
Avengers: Don't go Shimmershield/Defend!!! DA squads are simply too terrible in CC to be worth it. They need everything they can get to shoot a squad dead, if they get assaulted by a CC squad, it's over, they're dead, no matter what equipment the Exarch has to help them. Go dual-cat for 5 extra shots!
Pathfinders: Again, non-ideal but fun. I like them, but don't get upset if a deep striking squad shows up and kills them before they have time to do much of anything.
Warp Spiders: I like these guys. I'd try and flush them out a bit, as you'll want tons of shots for dealing with horde.
Falcon: Don't bother with the Cannon upgrade. Try and give it a Brightlance (so all your shots are same Str and AP), or an EML (so you can move and shoot everything).
Fire Prism: Good choice (although they always are unlucky for me). Try to get a 2nd.

Yeah, Fire Dragons don't work in a Falcon. You need Fire Dragons charging at the biggest, most threatening tank first turn and popping it 2nd. A Falcon needs to be hanging out in back, providing fire support. They simply work in opposite directions. Plus, a WS is way more survivable and more likely to get the Dragons to their target.
A Falcon simply is a waste if you're using it for actual transport, it needs to be shooting. The only squad that works well in a Falcon is a 5-man DA squad, simply to allow it to score an objective at the last moment.

If you are keeping the Falcon in the list drop the PW DA down to a 5 man and slap it in the falcon and use the points and serpent for your banshees/dragons. To be brutally honest, DAs are terrible terrible in CC unless you are slap fighting with IG.

Bad List.
Farseer and Autarch are fine.
Fire Dragons mounted in a wave serpent is good. Add a Bright Lance to it.
5 Trecking howling banshees wont do anything. Half a turn and there dead.
SS with a lucky infiltrate might do some damage.
Add another BL on your wave serpent 1
Dire Avengers are good
Pathfinders can hold an objective why not.
5 Warp Spiders isnt enough to do anything.
Falcon and fire Prism sure.
Take out the Striking Scorpians, Howling Banshees, and the Warp Spiders. Your trying to do to much with to many types of units. Pick 1 unit to do one thing. 9 Howling Banshees in a Wave serpent would do a lot more damage than 3 elite units spread out.
Wraithlords are always a SOLID choice. You cant go wrong with a wraithlord. Every game they will do more damage then there worth and are easy to use and take alot of fire.
you have the right idea, just dont do to much.

Don't put all your AT eggs in one basket. Your firedragons will be zooming up the field to get up close and personal with enemy tanks. But if you have a BL on it and your opponent is Vehicle dependant, he will target your WS with FD and BL first.
Put scatter lasers on your FD serpent. Forces your opponent to think about target priority, since it has two threats. AT and Anti Horde.

Putting BLs on a FD Serpent is indeed asking to be priority number one on the 'shoot me' list. It almost ensures you won't get near a tank with the dragons, nor will you get more than one BL shot off. You've just wasted 230+ points is more to the point.
Shuricannons/Scatterlasers are all that you want on a FD serpent. Put BLs on your DA/ SG serpents so that the enemy knows you have anti-infantry/anti-tank on every vehicle. Mechanized Eldar is intended to overwhelm the senses, not let you focus on the part of the list that can/will hurt you and laugh off the rest. When building mech lists, if any one vehicle/squad combined is so overwhelmingly nasty that your opponent has to shoot it, you better hope that you have something else to do that job at the end of the turn.

In a mech list the Wraithlord has no place. It is too slow and even with long range weapons, they can be isolated by jump squads/ DS squads and end up locked in combat. If you wan't to run wraithlords run a foot list with the Avatar.

Eldrad can be in the list, keep him in his transport, dooming, guiding and fortuning the world. But only at higher points. 1750 maybe a bit low, 1850 and up definitely

Without overwhelming you with subjective advice or repeating what others told you, I'll just say that the Autarch works really well with Warp Spiders. Give him a Warp Jump generator and fusion gun. 18" BS2 melta is suprisingly effective, even as a single shot.
