The Situation:

There are two vehicles directly next to each other of the same type, (ie. two rhinos in a parking lot). A unit with a template weapon is firing at them. (ie. marine with a flamer). The firing unit is in the rear arc of one of the vehicles, but the side arc of the other. The template is placed over both vehicles. The first is hit on the rear armor. The second vehicles is hit on the side, but none of the side facing can be seen. Thus the shot is resolved against the rear of that vehicle but it is given a 3+ cover save. As a template weapon ignores cover saves, the 3+ cover save is ignored. See the crude diagram below.

..................
......[B>] ....
......[A>].....
...*.............
..................

Legend: [B>]=Rhino B [A>]=Rhino A *=marine with flamer

The Questions:
1) Is it legal to place a template over multiple vehicles?
2) Do templates ignore vehicle cover?
3) How do templates interact with the extreme angle rules?
4) Can a extreme angle shot allow a weapon that can not hurt the side armor hurt the rear armor?

Notes: All of the appropriate rules are in the "Vehicles" section of the BRB (pg 60-62). Also, I know that the example given is not the best tactical situation, but it makes a good example. If that bothers you, you can replace the two rhinos with two Battlewagons, and the marine with a LR with a flame storm cannon

Here's my stab at this one...

1)Yes - but you must place as much of the template over the original target as possible. If you touch the 2nd vehicle, then thats a bonus. If youre firing at something like a squadron of Killa Kans, then you could put it over two models (as they are part of a unit, and you're therefore causing more hits by hitting two of them)

2) Yes. The rulebook specifically states that flamers ignore cover saves, and obscurement grants a 4+ cover save, which is ignored

3) See 1), you must put as much of the template over the first target as possible

4) It depends on where the firer is - if the firer is standing in the rear "target section", youd hit rear armour. You cant for example stand at the side and point the flamer at the rear armour

I forgot the part about the template hitting as much of the vehicle as possible. In the diagram lets say that the flamer is targeting at Rhino B, as the template would have to hit Rhino A in the process.

On 4) You can stand in the side section of a vehicles and hit the rear IF the side facing is completly covered from LOS. The vehicle then gains a 3+ cover save that is then ignored by the flamer?

Yes, that is correct - you cannot fire in the side, as you cannot see it. So you fire in the arc you CAN see, the rear, and resolve shots against that armour facing.
