So we are starting to get into higher points levels for our fortnightly matches.

I play Red Scorpions (see my blog in the signature), my friend Daniel plays Nurgle CSM's and my friend Marcus plays Orks.

Both the Red Scorpions and Plague Marines are very well matched, both have FNP, more plasma than a blood bank and roughly the same numbers of boots on the ground, the games are pretty even and it's normally a draw or a very slight win.

The green tide however eats us up, completely by turn 3 at the worst and turn 5 at the best, neither of us have won a game yet due to the sheer amount of troops and attacks but this is a tale for another day.

I'm here today to ask about the LRC TH/SS death star unit, it's positives and shortcomings.

Now my commander is ALWAYS a Terminator Librarian with a SS, he takes names, homie has a lot of kills to his name and is fairly survivable. We're up to 1500pts now and I would like to give him some friends and some wheels for his new posse to roll around in. I bought a LRC/LRR kit the other day for them and as it is un built (I still don't know the best layout) I thought I would ask about the effectiveness of this unit.

I see quite a few people running a Librarian or Chaplain in a LR with 7 TH/SS terminators. At what points cost does this become an option? I think it is always going to be useless against my ork friend and as my nurgle friend just said to me 'it only takes a few good lascannon shots' (he has 3 oblits) and everyone is walking.

I've worked it out to be ~700pts

For almost that amount I can get 3 more Tac squads all with apothecaries, plasma guns, missile launchers and rhinos who will be able to capture objectives and put out a ton more firepower but obviously no ability to insta kill much or deny saves.

How is the TH/SS LRC Lib combo ever effective? I know they are hard to kill but they are limited to only CC easy to mob, easy to isolate and immobilise. 3 troop choices can zoom around all over the board and take objectives, can combat squad, can shoot, can assault and while they are not the most effective at any of those, they can do everything to a relatively good base level.

I have all the stuff to give it a go but with the point levels we play at it seems a bit pointless to bring them into my army.

Thoughts/advice/suggestions?

Thanks
Jack

Are Red Scorpions from an Imperial Armory book? I guess their tac squads get Apothecaries? Do they replace the Sergeants?

Against orcs, 100% thunderhammers seem a waste. In a Landraider squad with a Independent Character, I'll typically have 4 LC's and 3 TH/SS. This gives you a few guys to soak up AP1/2 hits with their SS, but still keep your init high enough to tear through orks before they attack.

Lightning claws will go on Init 4, have 4 attacks on the charge, and will reroll wounds.

Thunderhammers will go on init 1, get 3 swings on the charge, but will cause instant death (which is great for Nobs and FNP units).

Now, for their ride. I am a huge fan of the LR Crusader. When it moves 6", it can fire the Assault Cannon and both hurricane bolters AND use PotMS to fire a multimelta. Hurricane bolters will eat up orks. Assault Cannons can crack open truks, rhinos, and other transports. So can Multimeltas, for that matter.

LR Redeemers look great on paper. However, if you move them 6", you'll only get to shoot 1 weapon AND an additional with PotMS. While a S6/Ap3 flamer will destroy a unit of marines in cover, the range is limited. It's very tempting to take, and understandable. But I haven't had any luck with it.

You will be tying up a ton of points on this unit, though. What will having a Librarian run with these guys give you? That's the question you need to answer. Would you rather put the Librarian with another unit to have 2 decent units, or would you rather just have the one kick-ass unit? Choices, choices...
