Quick example for you, to confirm my reading of the rules is correct.

Wounding in combat happens like shooting? eg? anyone in the 'wounded' unit may take the wound from the CC attack (subject to no-one taking more that 1 wound until everyone has taken 1)

So my example;

5 Orks attack 5 Space Marines. However 1 Space Marine is out of 6'' range of the orks, So 5 Orks are effectivly in BasetoBase with 4 Space Marines

4 Orks have Slugga + Choppa, 1 Ork has Power Claw

4 Spaysh Murines have Bolters, 1 Space Marine Has a Storm Shield (this is the chap who the orks couldnt reach)

(for the purpose of the example dont read to much into how can the space marine have that blah blah its the wound allocation im questioning)

So the 4 Orks score lets say 10 hits, and with some poor dice rolling manage no wounds. The power Klaw ork however manages to wound.

CAN the space marine player allocate this wound onto the Stormshield chap (in this case to get the invul save)?

If i am correct in thinking you can do this with shooting can't you? So is it the same in combat?

Ta boyos!

In combat any member of the unit may be assigned to take the wound, regardless of WHERE they are physically.

So yes, in this case the PK wound could be assigned to the honour guard space marine with the Stormshield

Remember that, UNLIKE shooting, close combat makes ICs count as seperate units - so you have to explicitly attack them if you want to wound them, and the owning player cannot allocate wounds onto the IC if you were hitting the main unit instead.

Right thanks!

and i also assume if an IC enters combat with a squad he was with, then he must be in BtB to have wounds directed to him?

So you can have 5 marines in Combat with 10 Orks (2 each) and the Warboss stood behind the orks (not in comabt with the marines) attacking and taking wounds?

or if he is within 2'' can he be attacked? or does that rule only include 2'' of someone of your OWN unit?

OK, you've got the regular unit bit down correctly, in that wounds may be allocated to any model in the unit, regardless of whther they are engaged or not. Exactly as it says on page 39.

Now, for ICs, simply put, the IC must be in btb to attack and to be attacked. This includes ICs that have joined a unit, only exception being an IC in a retinue, those are treated as upgrade characters. Only models that are in btb with the IC or engaged with the IC and NOT in btb with other models can direct their attacks at the IC. Wounds from attacks directed at the IC are allocated to the IC and do not carry over anywhere else, and vice versa, wounds on the unit the IC is with will never carry over to the IC. See page 49.

crystal clear now! thanks guys! So in effect ICs in combat are a little more vulnerable, depending on the situation!

Great though, putting this into proactice more means our assaults phases should go quicker now, rather than the 15-20 mins we now spend farting around!

thanks
