Hi Dakka folks,

So I managed to obtain three drop pods abd they are unpainted. However the door emblems are Space Wolves. Once I take an emblem off, there is some scarring of the plastic, so I will need to replace the emblem to cover the scarring with something else as I don't think the primer will cover it.

The area needed covered is about 1.5 cm wide by 1 cm tall. I would like it to be relatively flat, so when the doors open the will lay flat as well. The have to be pretty inexpensive as I will need 15 of them for three drop pods.

Ideas?

Thanks,
Ted

If you'd like, you can pass them off as battle damage. Just add other battle damage on the pods.

Can you provide a photo? I'm having a hard time picturing it.

Violence is not the answer, but it's always a good guess.

I can't of my pod, but here is one that will illustrate the point:

See the small square Black Templars/Iron Cross emblem on the door? That is just a badge you glue on. I have to remove the plastic Space Wolves Emblem that is similar to that and replace it with something else in order to cover the damage from removing the Space Wolves emblem. A water transfer will not work, as it will not conceal the damage.

Why dont you just remove the emblem and sand it flush?

Because there will still be a texture difference that I do not think the primer will be able to conceal.

I am not a top grade modeler, so maybe I am wrong?

If you sand it down proper it should be covered up quite well by primer. or if not sand it down put some new emblem or greenstuff over it. There are tons of solutions to fixing the problem.

I'll try that guys- thing I will get a Dremel tool to speed up the process though. If it does work, I can always cover the area after I piant it.

Thank you all!

You could also just cut the design off of the raised area and use some greenstuff to make a smooth looking square. Add a small chapter transfer on the square and your good to go.

Why not just not use the square at all?

Easiest solution: glue a square plasticard on them. Then after painting, you can put water transfers with no problem. Just make sure the cards are evenly cut.

Presuming you can't sand it down to a prefectly smooth surface (which depends a lot on how bad the damage is and how good a sander you are), I'd cover the spots with:
- imperial eagles (availalble on several SM kits)
- icons for whatever chapter your army is (depending on how readily available they are or how easy they'd be to make from plasticard etc)
- any other kind of flat iconography, e.g. scrolls, banners
- techy bits, e.g. vents and sensors
- battle/landing damage, adding a few more scars here and there
- or a mixture, considering you'll need 15 ...

It was already on there when I bought the model- I bought it used.

I wish I could do that, but I am not that skilled, especially since being diagnosed with diabetes and peripheral neoropathy. That was something I should have mentioned.

Oh wow...I think we have a winner! I think I have some of that tiled sheet styrene laying around! I can cut it to the size I need!

All, very good suggestions- thank you!

I saw the eagles, but to get 15 of those puppies (actually 12, because the already have one each on them) would be a bit costly from what I have found at $2.00 per icon. I do need to look into the scrolls though!

I dug into my bits boxes, and looked for items. Since all I have is 3rd edition bits, I am a bit limited. I have at least 4000 pts in unassembled Catty IG as well, all third edition and didn't see too much there either.

I had though of the battle damage, but thought it would look look odd somehow to have the damage the same area on the doors.

Hmmm...a mixture....

Anyways...thank you all again. DD is a great place to fish for ideas outside my FLGS!

Okay, you guys are awesome and here is why!

I started messing with the sheet styrene. Since it is tile, it is very easy to cut with a straight edge and an Exacto knife.

I cut a 1/2 wide strip off the end, snapped it off and trimmemed it up. Perfectly straight. Wonderful stuff.

Then I got to messing with the strip. I was checking for size, proportion, etc. I wasn't sure if I was going with a diamond shape, square, rectangle, etc.

Wellllll.......

There are two sets of rivets on the bottom that are exactly 1/2" wide. I can not use these to perfectly align the strip I cut and run a strip from the bottom of the door to the pivot right below the three "vent slots" located in the upper center 2/3rds of the door, creating a custom look to the pod as well as a nice area to place troop designations and the like.

Thanks al for the inspiration- exactly what I was looking for even if I didn't know I was!
