Hi guys, i've been browsing through the SM codex looking to get inspired for something and read about the Flame falcons, I was considering doing (as just some fun stuff) a small squad wreathed in flames, flames from the joins inthe armour and so forth, but what i wanted to know was if anyone knows anything more about them? the colour the armour was or something to help me flesh out the background of the models? I'm not aiming them to look like the LOTD but as they immolated on the front lines of Raffenburgs world during battle.

cheers everyone

The Flame Falcons were lost in the warp with their entire chapter+Fleet.
The guys who randomly started immolating were from the cursed founding and i can't remember their names but i'm pretty sure they are seperate.

Chapter approved III , page 8:

Cursed founding:
Flame Falcons

Were declared excommunicate 100 years after founding.
The Flame Falcons did well in their first campaigns against orks and eldar.
In the battle of "Raffenburgs (welt)" the 1st comany became wreathed in flames (without beeing burned themselves).
The whole chapter shared this fate but a Inquisitor was present and called the Grey Knights to deal with them.
Following the Flame Falcons to their home world Lethe, the GK attacked the Flame Falcons and maybe killed them all, but it is possible that a handfull survived.

So where did yyou find the Flame Falcons in a SM codex?

I always thought the Flame Falcons end was incredibly tragic.

No the flame falcons were definetly the chapter (from the cursed founding) that set on 'magical' fire, they were presumed to be destroyed, but reports still persist.

The fire hawks (also from the cursed founding) were lost in the warp, and the remnants are believed to have become the legion of the damned

i think i remember the flame falcons being orange/yellow

Well there you go i got 'em mixed up. Though it does seem easy to do with the whole Flame-Bird of prey aspect.

hey thanks guys, someone on dakka ages ago posted a rogue trader era pic with a colour scheme but I couldn't work out the right one as the pic was blurry :-( i don't want to do an entire army (at this stage) but just want to do something I thought some Dakkaites would think is cool? The part in the SM codex was only a small bit towards the start of the book, i can't recall what page, but there's a black and white pic accompanying it. :-)

Yeah i see the bit you're talking about now it's on Pg9.
Don't know about a colour scheme i suppose something bright with a falcon as a badge like in the picture but from there i wouldn't know.

Legion if the dammed and fire hawks are different. Legion of the dammed are thought to be fire hawks but no ones sure.

You have a better theory?
And wouldn't the Fire Hawks (pre-supposed Legion of the damned) just be represented by a normal SM codex.
The Flame Falcons on the other hand i could see getting then immolation thing because, well, they did immolate, although a small blast template would be way too much, maybe just the models in base-to-base contact getting hit?

The Flame Falcons got a cover save as 'feature' in their WD/CA rules.

Well Actualy they where a redish color. I plan on doing this chapter myself...I might use either chaos marine codex or blood angel codex...I already have a dreadnought, one terminator and a couple of troopers done. However, I figured that if they immolate often the paint of their armor should "bake" and become brownish...

The chapter was based on Lethe, almost destroyed by the grey knights. It is said that some escaped...

I figure that the black rage and their advantages could apply to the Falcons or use the berserkers or mark of khorne if I use the chaos codex

At http://www.snakeyesgaming.blogspot.com/ there are some pictures of one of my mate's Flame Falcons army. If you were at Games Day US this past year, it was the Flame Falcons army that was entered into Armies on Parade. He also has some background posted.

Nah, Legion of the Damned have been part of 40K since Rogue Trader days. This is just the first edition to have them as an option in the main Codex, previously they'd been confined to White Dwarf and Chapter Approved.
royal house wrote:Legion if the dammed and fire hawks are different. Legion of the dammed are thought to be fire hawks but no ones sure.
I'm pretty sure. While GW has taken to just hinting at it in recent years, they were much more forthcoming when the LotD were first introduced.
The first time Imperial forces saw the Legion of the Damned, they were in a entombed in a pair of recently jettisoned space-coffins identified as being from one of the Fire Hawks lost ships. While the Astartes within the coffins had "unconventional armour colours and unofficial insignia", the serial numbers on the equipment matched those of the Fire Hawks. The marines within the armour were unable to be identified, due to the advanced state of decay they were found in. And when the LotD first saved an Imperial garrison from Orks, they left behind the chapter flag of the Fire Hawks, although the motto "For the Emperor beyond the point of death" was inscribed upon it.
They also left, and here's the clincher, a data recorder explaining what had happened. The Fire Hawks fleet had been caught in an unexpected warp storm, and all but one craft lost. This craft managed to break free of the warp, but found itself thousands of light-years off course. Worse still, the surviving Fire Hawks were stuck down with some kind of disease or mutation. They began to rot and putrefy, their skin blackening and flesh festering. Almost half of the remaining Fire Hawks had died before they made it back to Imperial Space. The remaining survivors, around a single company in number, were driven insane. They were doomed to agonising deaths, and wanted only to die. They removed all insignia from their armour, repainting it black, and decorated it with emblems of death. As the Legion of the Damned, they would find release in the only way an Astartes can, by dying with honour on the battlefield.

They also couldn't ride in transports and lost ATSKNF.
TFlash wrote:Well Actualy they where a redish color.
Were they? While red certainly fits with the whole 'flame' thing, I can't recall ever seeing a colour illustration of a Flame Falcon. Where was it you saw them depicted with red armour?

My mistake...I should rethink my paint scheme...I ASSUMED thatthe two black space marines where lost and the damned so the red one in between ( Brother Craig) was the flames falcon, the image I was looking at at first was crappy and thought the dirt on the lower leg where a flame pattern...
