I just started an Imperial Guard Army and I was wondering what to get next. I have the battleforce, and I am getting over $200. I was thinking of getting a Leman Russ tank or two, a Command Squad, 2 sentinels, and a Cadian Shock troop squad. Are these smart next purchases?

Depends, what kind of list do you want to run? $200 aint a lot when it comes to IG, even at 1000 points

True. I was thinking more of a tank heavy army with the Infantry to hold objectives. I usually face 'nids, so I don't want my infantry getting slaughtered too easily.

I would spend your $200 on three of the same thing. Any cash left over would probably be best spent on a box of infantry.

If you want an infantry+armored list, then 3 regular russes would probably be the way to go (make sure to pin or magnetize as much as possible - you're going to wind up with regrets if you glue right away). Or more infantry. Unless you want to do mech+armored, in which case you should start with 3 chimeras before you do anything else.

Really just depends on what you want to do.

That is very true. The other day I got a Leman Russ and an Executioner for $50.

The best way I find to play guard now is to get it cheep through ebay or trades.

Or, you could have started when I did when 20 guardsmen was only $24...

Wow, that's kinda funny.

I'm actually changing my list from mainly infantry to mainly tanks, so it really worked out for me.

Valkrie? Can't get killed too easily by Nid, and they get stuff like rocket pods to kill the guants! If he does a MC army, get a vendetta.
Or a load of Leman russ punishers to kill the swarms.
Or if he relies on venomthroaps, get a load of leman russ eradicators.
Leman russ executioner with plasma sponsons might be good to kill carnifexes and other MCs.

I would stay away from sentinels for the time being. They're not universally useful and more importantly aren't a lot of in game points for the money.

As Ailaros mentioned If you do get Lemans I'd recomment magnetizing the guns so you can swap them out. I wouldn't get more than two though. Manticores (1 or 2) are good against any army. You can't go wrong with more soldiers. You can never have too many guys =)

I'll make it easier on you guys, I'm the Tyranid jerk he faces most.

My list is weird, it's kind of melee heavy. I don't zerg but I don't have a whole lot of MCs either. A couple squads of Genestealers (each with a Broodlord), a brood of Hive Guard, a brood of Zoanthropes, a Tyrant, a Trygon, and some melee shrikes. It's a weird list, I know.

Kingdom Death Fanatic. Dark Eldar: Kabal of the Fragile Breath. Dark Elves: Allegiance to the Black Crown. Also, Masons, Cygnar, and Legion of Everblight. All unnamed.

Holy gak that is an awesome username. Please tell me your army is called Kabal of the Fragile Breath. Morathi's Darkest Sin has some competition here for best handle, I think.

Hmm. Try a Leman russ executioner or a Leman russ exterminator. (executioner's probably your best bet, though. By all means, magnetize. Anyone know where to get said magnets from?

A big part of this is "buy used". You can reliably find used Chimeras and LRBTs for $20 online, and that's a huge money saver for a new IG army these days. Similarly, you can save quite a lot of money on new stuff by going to a discount retailer.

I assume you have the battleforce and $200. In that case:

If it were me: another Cadian squad ($25), two Chimeras ($40 used), two Valkyries ($80 used), two LRBTs ($40 used), a blister of meltaguns ($8 new), and a fourth heavy weapon team lascannon ($2 off eBay, possibly free from your friends).

This should give you enough bits to rig up:
1. Melta CCS
2. Flamer vets
2. Plasma vets
3. Melta vets
4. Sentinel of your choosing (scout with autocannon and HK missile?)
5. Vendetta (use the HWT lascannons (wings) and sentinel lascannon (second one for the nose) for the conversion)
6. Valkyrie
7. Two plain-jane LRBTs (which, incidentally, are awesome and under-rated)
8. Two Chimeras

Points-wise, this should run you to over 1000 points pretty easily, and might even get you to 1250 points if you have sponsons on the LRs. It should also be rather effective against any army.
