My wife and I are traveling to the Philippines on Saturday for work and will be there for a couple weeks, we are stopping in Honolulu, Hawaii for a 1 day lay over on our way there. I have asked the wife if it would be cool to make a stop at Other Realms gaming and 40k shop while we are there for our one day; my wife believes this to be indicative of my sad, sad gaming habit, however I say it is perfectly normal for gamers to want to check out shops when they travel. You be the judge!

It's normal if you just want to check it out. If you want to spend an entire day of vacation there you may want to reconsider.

If its a work trip, you could just leave her home. My significant other has no idea that I can bring her on work travel, and i intend to keep it that way.

I am actually tagging along on her work trip... Every place we travel, I break out the laptop to find the local shop... She thought I would lose interest in the habit over time, but when we hit Warhammer world in Nottingham, she knew she was screwed.

You are going to get a very one sided vote here mate.

I hope you don’t plan on showing this poll to the misses and saying something like,

“See all these people who also play WH and proliferate on a wargameing site agree with me”

Cause that s*** won’t fly.

And yes it is perfectly normal to want to visit a 40K shop while on holiday.

You could also turn this into a blame game if she dares venture into any shop while you are there.

"Oh!" (you will say when she mentions wanting to stop in one of the touristy shops that infest Hawaii like flies on your cup of mango juice) "So it is ok for you to shop around while we're here but not me? I see where I stand then."

Then walk away with your nose in the air

I'd say introduce her to a thing called troll beads, but thats a can of worms that your wallet would rather have left closed.

Try to do something you both enjoy, but keep in mind that a relationship also requires that both of you give eachother some "me" time.

40k is 40k. It's not like it's going to be terribly special one place or another. Why don't do something you couldn't actually do elsewhere, it's freakin' Hawaii for Pete's sake. There has gotta be like.. a Volcano or something you can see in a 1 day stop.

Some places have very old OOP stuff that they sell on the cheap because it's been sitting there for decades. Also some places have very cool gaming areas or display cabinets. I always check out the local scene on vacation (my wife loves it too! Ain't I lucky?!)

If you just want to stop by for a bit and check it out I see nothing wrong with that.

If you want to actually play a game or spend a lot of time...axe it.

I've been to three separate GW's and I find each has a different focus on certain armies. I would find it interesting to see what hawai's GW would look like, especially their displays.

Seriously... HAWAII.

I'm going to have to go with your wife on this one. While I understand the gamer point of view, this would be equivalent to going to the Grand Tetons and then frittering away the one day that you're there at retail outlets in Jackson Hole.

I think It depends- If you wanna pop in, check it out, fine. If you want to spend all day there...
But then again... since we do 40k too, we won't exactly say it's sad, and it's pretty difficult not to be biased...

IF you go shopping then I would say check it out, but put it at the bottom of your list of things to do.

I would say check it out, I search GW's site before every vacation to see if there are any were I am going.
But like others have said, if you are planning anything more than just stopping in, I would have to say no, there are many better things to do on vacation than getting in a game!

I only wish I had thought to look around when i was in Hawaii last year.
I agree withthe others when they say make it a quick stop.
And if there are a couple stores she wants to check out near the place you are going tell her you'll meet her there shortly. That way she won't feel like sighing impatiently while you look around, (nor will she see you dropping half the joint account at the cashier).

This. Although there's really nothing wrong with it, there's so much more you could do while you're there.

Okay, visiting Warhammer World while you're in Nottingham I get.

But if I had only one day in Hawaii, a game store I'll never go back to wouldn't figure on my list of things to see.

It's always interesting seeing privately owned game stored in foreign parts. If it were a GW store, I'd say skip it. But an indy store in Hawaii? You might find some great 28mm polynesian war canoes that will inspire an entire beach terrain theme for you. It's worth checking out.

Normal. I prolly wouldn't be overly interested unless the group i was with wanted to go to the beach, which would get an extremely unenthusiastic yippee then I'd head to GW. As stated, to each his own though.
