I'm putting together a fluffy Cothique expeditionary High Elf army (basically the crew of a ship or two) and I want some opinions on how fluffy I can make the models. My Sea Guard obviously is ok, and so far I have just the default models with minor adjustments for everything else, but I have some other plans that I'd like feedback on.

First, Sea Lions, counts as White Lions

They are supposed to be the toughest marine veterans on the ship, personal friends of the captain, who have served with him for hundreds of years. They each wear a sea dragon cloak taken off of corsairs they've defeated in battle.

For the model, I was going to use DE corsair cloaks, legs and weapons of White Lions. Chest and head I'm undecided on - chest will either be corsair or white lion - I need to experiment a bit. Head will be either default While Lion snipped of the tassel or WE Glade riders.

Second, the one I'm more worried about, Sea Dragon Hunters, counts as Phoenix Guard

They hunt Sea Dragons, Kraken, etc... all the most fierce creatures of the ocean. They use heavy harpoons (counts as halberd), cause fear because of their many scars and reputation, and are just plain lucky to have survived that long in their line of work, giving them the 4+ save. Doesn't quite hang together 100%, but meh...

Anyway, for their models, I'm thinking of just using WE Eternal Guard, and chopping one end off of their spear thing. Then I'll GS some rope onto their "harpoons" and make other minor modifications so they look more nautical.

What do you all think? If you encountered these characters at an open table with a stranger at your FLGS and they explained what each was, would you be ok? What about at a local tournament?

Thanks for any/all opinions.

As long as it was clear what the models represented I don't see why anyone would mind.

Anything that's cool gets my approval.

I remember watching a game that pushed Counts As... to far.

"Right, I need 20 dice..."
"Woah! What are you doing?"
"Rolling..."
"Those dice are my Brettonian Bowmen!"

The idea sounds good and be sure to show us your progress.

Someone can play a night goblin army using the rules for skaven for all I care, as long as there's consistency amongst the army, it's all good.

Yes, so long as the Sea Dragon hunters don't end up looking too close to the sea guard to tell them apart, it seems like it'd be fine. Cool idea, by the way.

To parrot those above -

So long's everything looks distinct and you can generally surmise what weapons they've got, should be fine. As always - the Rule of Cool tends to trump.

One suggestion though - the name Sea Lions sounds....sort of silly (I'm imagining them bouncing balls off their heads :p). Maybe something a bit more badass, like Tiger Sharks or something (to keep with the feline-theme)?

Miraclefish...

As funny as that is, I have let that by in a friendly, and even done so myself.

When I want to playtest something before purchasing it, I will always use a counts as (and even in one case had to use markers) with one of my gaming buddies before spending the cash.

I certainly wouldn't go to a GW store and do so, but I don't really see anything wrong with it in a friendly (nor am I suggesting you would either). I think most people tend to let little things like that with their friends go.

Ooh, Tiger Sharks is a good idea. I may steal that, since Sea Lions was kind of a joke in the first place. Make their axes all serrated or something. I will post pictures, once I start doing them (my wife made me promise to finish painting what I have first. And then I need to get IoB and paint all of them) and get my camera fixed or get a new one. If you want to see some crappy pictures of the first guys in my army, check the link in my sig.

I've gotten a lot better at painting since then, but it should give you an idea of my theme.

Yeah as long as you accuratly represent the wargear on your models and they're with in a reasonable size in comparison to the real thing you can model your armies however you like.

As long as it isn't ridiculous I wouldn't mind it. If the person made a very nice/cool looking army, that makes all the more difference for me.
