My friend has a Necron army, but it can only reach 1500 points, and I know he has:
  • 2 10- man squads of warriors
    10 immortals
    a monolith
necron lord (he will absolutely take res. orb)
    several scarab swarms
    destroyer(s)- not sure how many

  • I have:
  • 10 assault marines/ vanguard vets.(interchangeable)
    5 sternguard vets
    2 land speeders
    2x 10 man tact. squads
10 scouts(converted from guardsman, only have combat weapons)
    land raider(standard)
    whirlwind
    predator(lascannons)
    5 devastators(2 lascannons, 2 hvy bolters)
    dreadnought
    drop pod
    5 terminators
    captain(power sword)

  • Should I take lots of close combat troops, or focus on blasting the monolith?
remember that there is a 1500 point limit though, and if you are a necron player, then is there a way to get past the "We'll be back" if he has res. orb?

I may be a complete noob when it comes to marines, but htis is my advice:

    I would ignore the monolith.

I would swap things around so that you could get a unit of Lightning claw terminators, preferably 10 man, and then attach a terminator chaplain to him. They should be able to destroy both units of warriors with ease, and the Lord will most likely be attached to one of those units. With them down, he would be close to phase out. Just hammer the rest of his army from there.

Whichever they are, I'm not on the Reich ones, clearly.

Don't focus on the monolith. As long as you're damaging enough of the "necron" models on the table he won't particle whip because he needs to save them with the portal. Gause flux arc's are ok but he needs to get the 'lith close enough to do that.

As far as the rez orb, I don't think there is a way to over-ride it. It gets you saves from double toughness and power weapons...but if you can eliminate the entire unit and noone else was nearby then they wouldn't get to save.

He also played another guy I face a lot (Imperial Guard), and has a tactic where he hides his troops behind his monolith to the point where you can't shoot at it.
Also, remember, I only have 5 terminators, and a regular captain, not termie captain. I cannot proxy a normal terminator, as I will be short one man for 5 men, so can't take captain with termie armor and a terminator "retinue"

He only has 1 monolith ? see if you can flank him and shoot his warriors and try to Phase him out.

Isn't the monolith a skimmer? Just shoot under it if you have to. He'll get a 4+ cover save, but is he really going to use that if he has a 3+ armor save? Unless you're shooting at the warriors with lascannons, that is...

Granted this is sort of rules lawyerish, since there is a 98% chance he doesn't have the flying base which I'm told doesn't come with the monolith kit.

Also, you have two landspeeders, get zippy and force him out of cover. Drop pod behind him is also useful for this, although the fact that it needs to come in turn one limits its flanking abilities. Perhaps you want to get a second pod in order to get around the drop pod assault rule? Don't forget that you can have a empty drop pod. Kinda pointless, but if you're only trying to get around the drop pod assault rule, also kinda worth it.
