I'm looking into starting an IG army. I've been through many before, but until now they just haven't seemed "Appealing".
But now they do!
SO!
I am looking to get U'z Gyz/Galz opinions on USING or even facing against them.... plus how rich is the fluff? I love fluff!

I quite enjoy my IG army. I started 40k with a Tau army, but quickly realized I didn't like crisis suits...so I went and bought a metric tonne of tanks.
Guard are nice cause you can play many different styles, all of which are nice and fluffy and at least semi-competitive. The fluff is pretty fun too, Mordians are pretty epic; would YOU go to war in your dress uniform?
Guard have lots of toys, fun special characters, and interesting builds available.

I like the fluff of the guard the most out of anything. Something appealing to me about being just a regular man fighting against the massive xenos threat. I find myself much more able to place myself in their shoes- and once you do that you don't get nearly as angry when they're always falling back or being instantly killed.
Anyway, that's what commissars and leman russes are for

I dislike the guard codex fluff more than any (sorry). Its just not very grimdark compared to sisters or GK.
Their units on the other hand. They are awesome.

Not grimdark you say? Ever hear of the Old Irascible's or Death Korp of Krieg or Valhallans or Catachans or Cadians?
Old Irascible's: Okay let the nids in the city and then sacrifice ourselves by blowing up the city to kill the nids(it worked).
Death Korp of Krieg: Atomic war to rid itself of heresy and they still feel guilty(plus they wear skull styled face masks).
Valhallans: Planet plunged into eternal winter thanks to purging, live off of algae grown underground.
Catachans: Vegetarians are amazing, seeing as though the plants like to eat people.
Cadia: Birth rate and recruitment rate are one and the same, plunged into eternal war with chaos forces.
A lot of fluff, just gotta find it.

My Guard are probably my favorite army to play. They can do mobile mechanized infantry, armor-heavy, gunline, infantry horde, and just about anything else under the sun. They can even be close combat happy with Straken and some funky, kind of inefficient units like Ogryn and Penal Legion.
The only thing you need to do is make sure your heart can take the strain of dozens of your lovingly painted infantry dying each turn. That first game was painful.
Also, read Cadian Blood.

Ig are the best! The only army that I have that I keep buying more and more models faster than I can paint them. You never stop even when you have everything you need, and the stuff you dont. The best army to model and paint. Well at least for me.

Ig is for people who lack creativity.
The only way to play ig is to get as many tanks as you can, and hope you can out shoot ur opponent.

Yeah, IG have only 3 competetive builds compared to the Eldar's 2 . . . oh . . . wait . . .
I agree, If you want to play any army in an extremely competetive environment there a certain ways to maximize the codex's potential. When you do this people will lambast you for playing WAAC, or unimmaginative.
Playing in a less competitive environment I would agrue that the IG Codex allows you to be more creative than almost any out there. Sure, everything is built on the back of Armored vehicles, but you have 2 transports to choose from, a dozen heavy choices, loads of FA armor. Just cause everything is built on a LR or aChimera chasis (not including sentinels or valks) doesn't mean that the lists can't be creative.
Not to mention that you can tailor your troop choices to do whatever role you wish. Plus you have a massive amount of variation in the ways you can organize those troops.
Just cause everyone tells you to take melta doesn't mean its the only viable option.
(on a personal note, I fee like Eldar really keep people from being creative. If you want anti tank infantry- firedragons. In IG, you have CCS, PCS, Vets, IS, SWS, HWS . . . you get the idea. But hey, everyone is entitled to their opinion)

LOL!
Currently, the imperial guard codex offers more types of competitive builds than pretty much any other codex. Don't let the tournament circuit fool you. Furthermore, don't let vets of 3rd ed tell you how the guard play. The myth of all guard armies just sitting there and shooting you is nearing it's 10-year anniversary of being obsolete.
As for the fluff, I like the guard because they're one of two armies that stands a real chance of winning in the end (the other one being orks), and not only do they have a neat regimented yet flexible structure, but they have models that start looking nice with only a little bit of conversion work.
Lesser races win battles. Imperial guard has the logistics to actually win wars. Sooner or later, they conquer.

I accept you laughing at my statement because you are one of the few who I know actually dares to use footguard on a regular basis, and with at least a fair amount of success.
The tendancy for mech in the current meta, and the reffernce Smitty0305 made towards tanks shaped my comment, I agree wholeheartedly that IG on foot = awesomesauce.

IG are also one of the easiest to make your own fluff for, with every planet in the Imperium required to rase Guard regiments, you can always make a new planet up with your own look and feel.
Like others have said, IG are one of the most versitile; they just requre armour in most cases.
