Hello Dakka, hope you are all well.
Came across a little situation in a game I played last night and decided to ask dakka what you lot think.
I was playing Imperial Guard and I’ve kitted my company command squad with plasma guns. The captain also has a plasma pistol.
They were running back to an objective that had been lost to some bloodletters that had eaten its way thru my heavy weapons team which were sat on it.
Now they fired and the captain felt the effects of gets hot! nasty! he lived however thanks to his armour. Next turn after pushing a bit closer, he goes to fire again!!!!
Now the question is does a weapon that suffers from gets hot break, gets damaged, blows up, cannot be fired etc. or does the gets hot have no effect on the weapon for future turns.
Nothing in the tomb of rules suggest either so we have been playing that the guns a dud after a gets hot incident, what’s the dakka view on this?

If the firing model fails its armour save (and dies*) then yes, it is gone for all future turns, as that model is removed. As long as the model makes its saves, it can continue to be fired in future turns (subject to further "gets hot" results). *It is possible for a plasma weapon equipped model to have multiple wounds (like Dark Angel Ravenwing Master Sammael's jetbike). If they fail an armour save, they merely lose a wound and the gun is still able to be fired in the next turn.

You can still suffer 'Gets Hot!' on subsequent turns, and it can still fire. There's nothing in the rules that might stop it from firing in the future.
It's not a matter of the gun being a dud, it simply means that the weapons are unstable and unpredictable all the time.

Interesting.
I have a medic in that squad to help keep people alive, espically for the plasma gun guys, good to know if they do indeed survive they can carry on shooting next turn as normal. Thats not have we have been playing it.
Cheers.

Yes, medics (and FNP) can be used for the wounds inflicted by Gets Hot!. (giving you a 50% chance to ignore the wound after a 'failed' save. The wound from Gets Hot! DOESN'T disallow armour saves, and doesn't have a strength (so the usual disallows for FNP don't apply).
Why do you think so many BA players take plasma weapons in Death company?

I love plasma vets. I don't take medic's as it would mean one less Plasma. Best bet is to use "bring it down" as much as possible. With that order, you will get substantially less Get's hot results. Only problem is you gotta target MC's or Vehicles.

The problem with that is you have to disembark, which for Guard is grounds for Section 8.

Section 8??
I use melta's in my vets, seams to work well for me, with a commissar they tend to not run away which helps, a lot.
My thinking with the Company comand squad was the top guys get the top weapons, plus they hit on a 3 wound most infantry on a two, negates FNP etc, very handy but the way we had played it one gets hot and i have a guy running around with no weapon (provided he made his save).
So does anyone know whats supposed to happen to the weapon when it gets hot? does it vent gas or anything like that, as we asumed the gun melted before.

Fluffwise, it just vents off gas or something.
Rulewise, nothing.

As the others said, fluffwise the gun either gets too hot to be fired correctly, held, or otherwise used. So it either explodes and takes the poor marine/guard with it, or it just Gets Hot!

It's like a comp without a cooling system, except with the possibility of the temperatures rising to the levels of the sun. If the guardsman survives it, he probably dropped it on the ground before it fried his suit. In the same situation (assuming he was removed as a casualty) the gun melted through his hands making him unable to participate in combat.

getting out is the only way to fire after moving 12". It may be crazy, but when the unit I'm firing at is gone, there's plenty of time to re-enbark.
