So I was putting together a lot of tau drones today and it came to my attention that none of the flying bases and stand bits fit together.
Not with a push, a wee bit of muscle or acting like I was screwing it in. In fact I had to break out my circular file and make the hole almost twice the size that it originally was just to get a tight fit.

So tell me am I doing something wrong here or are GW deliberately trying to piss me off?

I've never had this particular problem over the course of 30 or so flying bases.

That said, flying bases are complete trash (more specifically, the stems).

For me the bases are hit and miss. Miss happening more often than hit.

I just Glue the stem to a 40MM base. It's got a bigger footprint, but if I really cared about that, I wouldn't use a ForgeWorld Broadside.

I started filling the hole in the base with epoxy or something similar, waiting for it to set, drill it out and then use some decent wire instead of the stem. Less chance of it snapping when dropped, no unsightly bubbles in the stems. I've used it successfully on mid-weight metal flying objects before and it should work with modern plastic GW products.

Need to try it soon with my old metal Landspeeder and have some concerns it may overload then base. We shall see.

Flying bases are somewhat annoying, I'm the only one here with skimmers who uses them and therefor suffers for this grievous error with stems breaking off in drones and tanks.

My flying bases don't break off.

Then again, I don't actually glue mine in (I don't know anyone here who even enforces the 'flying bases must be glued in' part of the basing 'guideline' (Apart from TMIR, if a rule can be ignored, it is merely a guideline).

I also enlarge the mounting hole from 1mm to 3mm and snap the little nubbin off the top of the posts.

The models sit firmly (even the metal/plastic hybrid Fire prism) with nary a wobble.

Best part is that they come apart for easy transport.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

I hate flying bases as many of them snap on me, so now i just game without them unless they are needed.

When the rich rage war it's the poor who die

I snip off the nubbin end, take a power drill to the hole in the model and perform unholy rites with prayers of the rod fitting nicely inside with little chance of it falling off mid pick up/move.

I was speaking of the stem to the base in all honesty.

stem into the model I don't have a problem with funnily enough.

But my drones are all glues up now. Bar the stem into them as I refuse to glue them.

I've had to open out the base hole with a 3mm drill on a few occassions, I feel your pain.

Like others I've come up with alternative methods for mounting drones, as I want to fit them into a standard size foam tray in my case. Usually this involves a short length of 2mm brass rod.

Back when gargoyles were metal i bought 8, which cost be roughly $96 back in the day. Used them 1 game... broke two bases off at the joint. Very sad.

SOLUTION:

Send me all your flying bases abd stems so that I may use them for other hobby-related madness.

Instead, model your bases with ruins or something more sturdy and then pin your flyer/skimmer to this instead.

Eg.

Somewhat later than promised...

This is part of my complete Landspeeder magnetization project, which I'm trying to finalise in the next few days.

It recycles the bottom of the GW base, or you could use whatever else takes your fancy.

I could do these as a kit for $2 or $5 for 3, including a 1/8" drill bit (which you'd need if you've snapped your GW flying base).

Note that you can pick up the base and wave it around without the model coming off, and the rubberised coating means you can pose the Landspeeder at some fairly extreme angles, which looks very cool when you have three of them!

Any thoughts/comments/pre-orders welcome!

Simon
