Subject: Ogre's or Lizardmen - Help Please :)

Hi All,
Looking to get together a force for WHFB, couple of rules im trying to stick to as limited by budget.
1) Preferably want to buy 2 x Battalions as a start point.
2) Have about £40 to add units/characters if needed.
So going with my preference of Ogre's or Lizards what sort of lists could I expect? How many points would I be looking at without over upgrading units?
I am open to suggestions of other forces/battalions if they would offer me a better starting point. Not looking for anything super competitive just fun to play at my local club.
Thanks in advance all, WZ!

What kind of army do you like more?
Mainly giant low count troops with funky magic and little guys with a few monsters or solid blocks of ld sturdy infantry with super casters, skirmishers, and a few monsters?
Also if you're in a budget, try ebay. you can get quite a few deals if you're patient enough

At the moment I'm more swayed towards the lizardmen if im honest.
I read a comment on here that said 2 Lizardmen battalions and a Slann Mage priest can see you at 2000pts. Not sure how playable that would be though.

Problem with the lizard battalion is that you'll have to put up with the terrible cavalry they have. So Ogres do have an edge on that everything they have is usable. Even if you dont want ironguts you could probably just do some convenient arm swaps to make them bulls and possible bruisers and tyrants. Plus if you have extra square bases, can get a lot more mileage out of all the extra gnoblars you get
But you still do get a solid chunk of saurus, temple guard, and skinks from lizzies. Could be workable with the addition of some salamanders or slann

What should I expect to add if I did go the Ogre route?

Adding on the battalions, some of their casters is good (although I think a conversion would be just as good) or a scrap launcher

Scraplaunchers look fantastic on paper, large blast with no partials and Killing Blow? Hello Chaos Warrior Block! Of course, I don't play Ogres so I don't know how they are in game, but I did consider them as a second army for when I get my Dark Elves settled.

Lizards all day in my book and I have no clue what he is talking about Lizard Cav. rules just pricey like cavalry is. Both are good armies, ROFL though as I write this I remember how amazingly awful the scrap launcher is to build... another vote Lizard's.
P.S. For those that don't know, Scrap Launcher is possibly one of the hardest models to get together in all of GW figs
P.S.S. Want to piss someone off, buy em one for Xmas and watch the hate texts fly, tip over/throw away their zip kicker before they start to make it SUPER fun

I play Ogres. Ogre Battalions are the best most versatile battalion out there, and in my opinion the best value, you will use everything in it at all point levels. Go with 2 battalions that will give you 48 gnoblars (more if you have bases for them) and 14 ogre bodies in each battalion. Ogre bodies can be used as Ironguts, Bulls or Leadbelchers. You get 4 Leadbelcher cannons in each and technically enough parts to make 6 Ironguts-4 great weapons +banner +bellower and enough bull parts to make all 14 bulls and have some bitz left over. To get a nice varied force I would go with one of these 3 options
2 Leadbelchers
2 Tyrant and Bruiser (BSB) conversions or a Butcher
6 Ironguts including banner and bellower
rest Bulls-18-banners and bellowers as needed
-or-
2 Leadbelchers
2 Tyrant and Bruiser (BSB) conversions or a Butcher
12 Ironguts including 2 banners and 2 bellowers for 2 IG groups
rest Bulls-12-banners and bellowers as needed
-or-
2 Leadbelchers
2 Tyrant and Bruiser (BSB) conversions or a Butcher
rest Bulls-24
A Bull Horde is a very effective unit nice thing about monsterous infantry is their cap from 2nd+ rank attacks is 3 so a Horde (6 for monsterous) is essentially 54 attacks+stomp attacks. Leadbelchers... their use is controversial, it is best to run them in groups of 2 or groups of 4 (2x2) chances are they will misfire, die and/or panic, they are more psychological then effective they do make great flankers but you may want to dump them for more bulls, either way I would not want to make 8 leadbelchers out of the 2 battalions, 4 tops. And if you want to make a scraplauncher, get a rhinox rider from Forgeworld and give him a cannon, instant scrap launcher. Your next purchase should be just that a scraplauncher, they use the large template, strength 3 and have killing blow, these ruin T3 armies. For a 2nd purchase I would go with 2 gorgers, they are great for keeping gun lines on their toes as you can enter the board from their edge, but take 2 cause it sucks when you can't get one in the first few turns, 2 will increase those odds. You can get they Tyrant/Bruiser and Butcher/Slaughtermaster models they are cool but expensive so you can just convert. Hunters are awesome models but pass, cool models but you're better off with a butcher or bsb, gnoblar scrappers are good too but just greenstuff some fir cloaks on the gnoblars you have and you're good. Maneaters are great models hell get a couple, use them as your tyrant/bruisers but right now maneaters are not as good as they were in 7th, though a maneater behind a defensive tyrant, gives the tyrant stubborn and they can lock down a unit all game, but then so can a block of 100 gnoblars for a much cheaper cost.
Ogres are great but there are rules. You need a bruiser or a tyrant to lead the army, you must have a unit of bulls per unit of gnoblars and a unit of gnoblars for a scraplauncher.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

I love my ogres. Leadbelchers and huge blocks of fatties are generally my preferred route. I don't have a single model I can't use, and instead of gnoblars I use skaven on the correct size bases for some extra 'fluff' to my made up Ogre tribe. Gorgers are great as Hargus said, and the scrap launcher really does make enemy players cry out in dismay at the amount of killing blows you're bound to get. Not to mention being able to accept almost any challenge and have a chance(Pending you set up your leader correctly) is fun, and even when you lose it still makes you feel all fuzzy inside. Hah.
My best buddy plays lizardmen and loves them, so it's really up to your preference.

Ogres are a very fun group to play as. I actually play ogres AGAINST lizardmen, and let me tell ya, two complete different armies. Those saurus are really great shock troops, and they put up a good fight, but the ogres are so few in numbers, but hey if you like painting less models for more points that's the route for you. Sorry for double post, But I thought I was the only one that did that

2 battallions of ogres will go a long way, add butcher/slaughtermaster, tyrant and scrap launcher.
those are good solid choices that can both do damage and keep our units together.
after that BSB and fun stuff like gorgers/yeti's or maneaters.
