I'm pretty new to 40k and am in the process of starting an IG army. Now I'm aware that allies can be used in armies (such as such as fielding both IG and SM units together) but can this be done with HQ units to? For example taking an Inquisitor with an imperial guard army?
If so, can this also be done with unique units? For example using Inquisitor Lord Karamazov as an HQ choice for an IG army?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

The only way to take allies in regular games of 40K is through the Allies rules in the Daemonhunter and Witch Hunter codexes. You can't take Space Marines in an Imperial Guard army.

The hardcopy versions (not the downloadable PDFs) of those two codexes explain in detail how it works.

The other option for taking armies with Allies is to play Apocalypse rather than regular 40K, which allows you to build your army with whatever you want, from however many different codexes you want.

I dont have the IG codex so I can't give you any specific information....

What I can tell you however, is that generally whenever ive played allied games, I stick to the FOC. So say for example I take a SM force commander and a Chaplain. That's 2 HQ slots gone, so you couldnt take any from the IG list.

I don;t think this is supported in either the IG or SM codexes, but in Apocolypse (free-for-all) you're encouraged to go nuts with this sort of thing. If you wanted to run it in regular 40k, get your opponents permission, and then stick to the FOC and within your points allowance and you should be good to go. Unless youre playing doulbes, I doubt this would be allowed at tournaments etc.

the Allies rule is only in the deamon hunters and Whitch hunters books. and it gives a very clear list of what your allowed to take and which army they can go into.

The long and short of it is all the units you take added together have to be able to fit into a single FoC and what units your allowed to take is very restricted. And only mix either of those codex with a single Imperial Codex. ie. Deamon hunter's with gaurd. SoB with Space marines. Unless your playing a friendly house rule Gaurd and Space Marine can not be in the same army.

For complete rules check either of those two codex's their Ally rule is pretty much exactly the same.

Exception being that you can have DH+WH+SM or IG (the limits on codex only state that inducted guard AND SM can't be used in the same army) as this was covered in an faq.

Right behind you. No, really.

you can take Grey Knights and DH in general for some codexes, but no, you cannot, for exaample, tak TWC in an IG list.
