Is it ok to paint over paper? primer onto the paper first?
I've used paper for the barrel on my auto cannon, as I stuck lascannons on there years ago, which i dont use & dont have the predator cannon anymore... =\
Its a bit bigger than usual but I think it looks good.

If the paper survived priming, it should be fine to paint over. At that point, you're applying paint to paint, not to paper.

I have a solution for you

Paint the barrel with White Glue, wait for it to dry, and then paint it or prime it as you see fit.

The white glue will dry clear and hard so as to provide a plastic-y surface to start from.

indeed, the white glue method will protect the paper greatly. Think paper mache.

Depends on what kind of paper, and what kind of paint.

Paper, depending on how thick it is, will warp if it contacts any liquid. This is why even paper that is made for liquid contact (like watercolor paper, for example), has a certain amount of tolerance on how much layers you can put on it before it warps. Cheap watercolor paper can handle only three layers, while higher quality brands will handle a fair amount of layers before warping. Needless to say, even watercolor paper will warp if exposed to liquids for a very long amount of time. This is why we stretch the watercolor paper when wet: so that it won't warp while we paint on it.

Violence is not the answer, but it's always a good guess.

Is that wooden dowel you used for the actual barrel? If so, you should be fine. It looks like you have enough layers of paper on the endpiece that it shouldn't warp.
