Well which Guard are you doing? Cadians, Iron Guard, Catachan, Tallarn, Valhallan, Vostroyan? The differant regiments will have differant types of names.

That said you can research historic generals or leaders from the differant cultures they come from. For instance Cadians and Iron Guard could have names from basic military history (although I would give an Iron Guard commander a more regal name or title). Valhallans would have Russian names, Vostroyans would have Cossack names, Tallarn would have arabic names etc.

Or if you have created your own guard regiment with a particular theme (vikings are popular) then research names for that culture. There is a great site called Behindthename.com that has names from just about every culture, theme, religion, mythology etc.

This, essentially.
It really depends on the theme of your guard. Valhallans, for example, are unlikely to be led by Captain John Hubertson.

Apart from race-specific names based on the model range you're using, you generally can't go wrong with old-timey names. It implies that they come from old families with a proud tradition - perfect fodder for the officer corps. For example, my commanding officer's name is "Daxos P. Clinton III".

So, take any two of like the following...

James
Bartholomew
Chester
Browning
Gaylord
Thaddeus
Gerald
Nigel
Cunningham
etc...
etc...

... and you very quickly get names like "James Chester Browning IV" and "Sir Nigel P. Gaylord" and "Bartholomew A. Cunningham", any of which sound officerey.

Of course, adding in your army's ethnicity for a splash of flavor is also a good idea (I have greek influences in mine, for example).

Actually those all pretty much sound like they would work for a Praetorian army.
