If it was April I wouldn't believe it but here it is: http://theminiaturespage.com/news/81205/ . Coolminiornot is putting up the money for their painting competition at Adepticon this year, and even the Trophies are Freaking AMAZING!!!!!! $10,000 to the top painted model or best in show!! This is actually history in the making for our hobby industry.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

Aye, I know Gencon does money for things like Privateer but I have never heard of that much... nor has anyone else. Heck even the Military Model Shows don't hand out that much cash.

They should just give it to me. A friend of mine is a prince in Nigeria who needs help transferring his bank accounts to the US, so if I can raise 9,849 for him to do the transfer, he says he can double the money once the transaction is complete. So, with his help we could actually double the prize money!

Here's hoping that if they keep on doing this year after year that it won't be dominated by the same people over and over again.

I think cash prizes are fine for hobby events of this magnitude. It can lead to some very lucrative tie-ins and sponsors for the party giving out the prize money. And honestly most other large hobbies give out cash prizes.

I just hope they have their tax paperwork properly arranged; there are some requirements to be met whenever you hand out that much cash.

This could lead to all sorts of things.. video games have big prize competitions and there's even a reality show on the sci fi channel. Next we'll have Syfy's Ultimate Wargamer..

"Billy, I decided to vote you off the show this week because although you are a fine painter, I just don't feel you are thinking of the team when you say the tau are a cheap anime knockoff, and as a Tau player that really hurt to hear your say that. I just don't feel your heart is in the game." <insert pretend tears here>

But who puts up the sponsorship? Would you have to paint one of their models (strictly speaking gambling, at least in UK law) etc.

Not sure it's necessary as a concept anyways.

Ya I don't think so. Their are a ton of painters world wide that are much better then her who have been showing up more and more to these events in the States. Team France, and Team Spain have been really dominating world wide, as well as Mathieu Fontaine as he is starting to get up their in overall demons won. Malnek is good but far from the best.

I'm just stoked that this is going to be done at Adepticon because it is really the one national event I already fly out to attend.

The painting competition there has always had some nice models but it has been fairly limited in terms of overall submissions.

This cash prize should definitely change that, I would think, and I really look forward to getting to browse through all the amazing entries.

Good stuff!

Gotta agree with the Yak.

One of the elements of Adepticon that's had room for more growth is the painting competitions. There have historically been some really outstanding entries, but not the kind of sheer volume of the Golden Daemons.

Hopefully this kind of promotion gives Adepticon the kind of world-class painting and modeling competition to match their gaming and seminar offerings. I'm really looking forward to seeing the entries in person, especially since I never attend Games Days.

However, jugding by her DVD, she doesn't seem to have too much trouble using her considerable assets to give her an advantage. Might swing her an additional point or two. Yeah, that DVD killed a lot of respect I had for her - not that it would worry her of course.

2014 will be the year of zero GW purchases. Kneadite instead of GS, no paints or models. 2014 will be the year I finally make the move to military models and away from miniature games.

That’s the idea. : ) Partnering with the guys at CoolMiniorNot to really raise the bar here with regard to launching a top flight independent painting competition. The stakes are high and these guys are dead serious about building a quality competition for years to come. So extremely pleased to be working with them. AdeptiCon has always had some of the best hobby talent on display. This is going to continue to expand that commitment and take those aspects of the convention to new level. Going to be some amazing stuff on display I can hardly wait.

Now between the Crystal Brush, an off the charts opening first week of registration, and with more mind blowing announcements still in the pipe.. AdeptiCon 2011 is going to be the best one yet.

@fullheadofhair: honestly I have never seen a compatition of professional caliber where your gender played into judging. Personally I have seen her at 3 seperate GD's and when she doesn't win gold well I am not going to troll but you get the idea.

@Yakface: I just love that I get to see you in seriousness it is a blast meeting everyone from dakka there!

First off, is this who we're talking about?

Secondly, and assuming I'm reading into, 'considerable assets', appropriately, what exact 'considerable assets' are you talking about, because I honestly don't see them.

You must not have respect for many semi-attractive women who have their pictures taken for virtually ANY promotion then.. Yeah shes showing cleavage, so what? We're gamers.. Polls show that gamers tend to like cleavage

Example? Reaper minis and D&D! Or I dont know.. anything with women that a male might buy.. see.. or think about. Its called marketing, would you rather buy a random painting guide with an attractive girl or some gamer dude eating a pizza on the cover ? Use what you got

Guess all women should just put on those amish outfits and how dare they show an ankle or two.. Those harlots

(Oh and I agree, her assets are not what I would think as 'considerable'.. but theyre fine just the same)

How on Earth is she supposed to somehow use her looks (which really isn't all that great) to influence the painting-judges?

Is she going to count on the judge thinking; "If I give her a high score she will sleep with me!"?

Unless of course, "considerable assets" refers to a connection to the Russian Mafia.

Aside from that I think that cash-prizes are an immensely stupid idea and shouldn't be connected in any way, shape or form to our hobby.
I believe it will kill any hobby aspects we have left.
