How would you make an army based on the wars of unification era?

With sheep and glue

Use IG vets with carapace armour.

Wars of Unification?

When the Emperor conquered everone on Earth and began to make the Primarchs thn the Space Marine Legions.
When he was doing the conquering he used a more primative form o the Space Marine Legions.

Basically Guardsmen, veterans in carapace, Pre-SM gene enhanced soldiery in Power armor Mk I.
No aquilas but the lightning symbol of the Emperor.
GW had 2 metal figs in PA Mk I and IMO they may give a hint on the heraldry.

The Blue guy with the plume is your man for Mk1 armour. that should give you some idea for modelling and conversions. Just beef up some standard Cadians.

I could do that or use converted ork trucks.

That would be a good idea... heavily converted obv.
