I'm looking at the possibility of getting an airbrush to repaint all my necrons with. Since I've maxxed out the models for any particular choise, this is a bunch of models. Has anyone found a way to make stencils that will fit on/around a non-flat object? Masking tape doesn't work as I'm looking for uniformity across the models, and the stencil needs to fit to the pieces (I'm okay with buying new models and painting before assembling) but be able to be used on model after model. I'm okay with taping things like the monolith, or other tanks if I were doing a different army, main body on destroyers and tomb spyders, as there's enough space there to make it somewhat easier. I'm even considering doing it for the tomb stalkers when I get those.

Suggestions on what to use would be good, advice from anyone experienced with this would be very appreciated. If this works well, I may use something similar for other armies as well.

Thank you

I'm kinda puzzled at what you're asking for. However I dont use Airbrushes so it might be a term I'm just not familiar with =x

Looking to make stencils to use on models, to block out parts from getting hit by the airbrush. Useful for painting symbols, details and accents, etc., such that you can transfer the stencil to the next model and have it look essentially identical. In part it's to be able to add a decent amount of detail to the models and maintain a decent rate of throughput while doing so. I'm thinking particularly useful for necrons, to give them that mass produced look.

if the parts are separate, try painting them before assembly might be easier. if you me stuff like decals on the bodies of destroyers....maybe cut something out of plasticard and hold it on a stick and spray through that?

There's also masking solution, a liquid that's brushed on and can be peeled off after painting. Often used in military modelling, it's probably available in hobby shops/craft stores rather than your FLGS. I don't know if it's precise enough to use to make a stencil, but it's worth a shot.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Ive had bad experience with liquid mask myself, maybe its just me, but it tends to bond abit with the base coat and primer.

I would suggest maybe using greenstuff to make a kind of mold so it fits snugly against the model, apply using a lubricant inbetween, then when its set remove it and cut the shape out you wish to stencil, reapply and paint... I've never tried that, I just made it up, but who knows, it might work.

Hope that makes sense and I'm not being an idiot.

Can give it a try. Mostly right now it's the theoretical stage. Before I lay out the money on the airbrush, compressor, etc., want to have an idea how I might go about what I'd like to do.

Thank you

Why not just use a thin piece of plasticard (.25mm or so) and chuck it in some hot water and then mould it around what you want to stencil?
You could then attach some plastic sheet or whatever to it so that the rest of the model is protected.
Down her e in the southern continent you can pick up a decent airbrush and compressor kit for about $200 so you can probably halve that price

a bit of blu tack over the area to be covered should work, sure its isn't scientific, but its lot easier than designing a 3d stecnil solution that replaces this method.

Even with Airbrush you are going to have to paint details on by hand afterwards so...............
