While it seems great that something so powerful as a LR can Deep Strike, is it worth it, considering how much of a risk it is Deep Striking something of that size onto a potentially crowded board? It's also more useful if it's in play from turn 1, as being able to use its weapons from the start. Is there anything I should know before ruling this out altogether?

It's worth it for fun, but since the thing is the size of a brick, bad things have a high chance of happening if you play on a terrain heavy board or try to drop too close to the Enemy.

Copied from another thread I posed in:

Deep striking Land Raiders are a joke. Firstly, and most importantly, units cannot assault out of a Land Raider that arrived by deep strike. Secondly, that Land Raider is in reserve, so any number of units that mess with reserves (OoTF being one that springs to mind) may very well delay not only the Raider, but also the 200+ point hammer unit inside. Thidly, the Land Raider has a ma-hoosive footprint on the table, thus increasing its chance of being mishapped (along with the unit inside) if it happens to scatter. Note the Land Raider does NOT benefit from the DoA special rule. Fourthly, the Land Raider has more than likely deep struck on top of you, thus bringing it even closer to the mass of meltaguns that you are wielding (you ARE playng 5th Ed. right?). Fifthly, the Land Raider can only shoot on of its weapons (PotMS) on the turn it lands, as opposed to the 1-2 it could do normally.

In theory its a good idea. In practice it sucks. Deep striking a land raider takes away all the things that make it great. They just become way to easy to kill (through misshap or enemy melta fire)

yeah...... you dont really want to deep strike a land raider if you can help it.... I can imagine it being useful in some circumstances (they have scouting units with meltaguns) but this really is not the best use for a raider. too risky, and you dont want to hold such a large portion of your army in reserve if you can help it.... not without some kind of way to control when those reserves show up.

Part of paying a premium on something crazy expensive like a landraider is your hoping your opponent will spend alot of turns trying to shoot it down instead of your less armored other units. In addition to all of the serious issues already mentioned if you hold your raider back you can have a situation where 100% of your opponents anti-tank is focused on >75% of your list and the most vulnerable parts of it no less. That gets exacerbated as each turn that it doesn't come in on goes by.

Also, POTMS

But yea deepstriking a Landraider is awful regardless.

Deep striking LR are a joke while bringing a buddie of mine up to speed with 5ed and new BA codex only game I beat him in is when he decided to Deep strike his land raider. Rune priest ended up immobilizing via psychic power behind terrain with blocked Los ended becoming 250 bunker for rest of the game

It's just a bad call. It is way too expensive of a unit, especially if it is carrying terminators, to risk losing via a mishap. Plus I believe many people have already mentioned you can't DS in and then fire a ton of the weapons so that is a no go as well.

LR are good, deepstriking them is not.

It's always an option. You may never use it except one game out of 50 but if you think it could help it's always there.

The main reason to buy is a land raider is so that terminators don't have to deepstrike. Increasing the squad size to 10 deep striking terminators is less points than the deep striking land raider.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

Well, you COULD do a deep strike army, spam drop pods with locatod beacons and pray that your LR comes in on turn 2. Not a good idea, but you probably won't mishap atleast...
