Pursuant to the thread discussing the RAW on this issue, I am interested to see how the Dakka community at large plays this.

This thread is not intended to delve into the actual debate, but rather just to see how people actually play this. If you would like to debate this issue, there is a thread already here:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/324697.page

I'd like to thank all respondents ahead of time for refraining to post any justification - the debate in the linked thread has all the information one would need to make an informed decision.

So here is the RAW:
Ork Codex p.98 wrote:Any Nob may take any of the following:
'Eavy armour[...]

Ork Codex p.98 wrote:Painboyz
One Nob may be a Painboy[...]

Ork Codex p.98 wrote:Painboy replaces slugga and choppa with dok's tools and 'urty syringe

Its also important to note that a Nob and a Painboy have different profiles, and the Painboy has his own entry in the codex.

Therefore

Option A = Yes the Painboy can have 'Eavy armour.

Option B = No the Painboy can't have 'Eavy armour

You forgot to mention that Painboyz and Nobz have differing profiles, which is important and seals option B as the RaW.

Where option C. Painboyz in Nobz unit Yes, Painboyz in Flash Gitz NO. As the codex makes this seem to be the right one.

The poll specifies that this is about Nobz squads.

While not wanting to stir up the argument one way or the other, this:

...is a fair point. The fact that they have different profiles is relevant to one interpretation here, so should be included in the list of relevant RAW in the first post.

I think it's pretty clear that the a Nob and Painboy are entirely different. The Painboy replaces his war gear is the intent of the upgrade. There is nothing that lets the "Painboy" take the armor, only a Nob. I would definitely say no to this one.

Not only that but in the Flash Gitz squad it's clear they can't. Why would this one be different? It's an oversight (gasp). I know, it's hard to believe but GW has those from time to time.

I let my ork opponent get away with it.

Personally, I think the rule is foggy enough that I don't care. Even if it is against strict RAW, it won't make a game-changing difference anyways... at least it is unlikely to.

Since the question is "how would you play it" then here is my 2 part answer:

A.) If you upgrade a Nob to a Painboy, he is no longer a Nob. Hence, different profiles, and nothing on that page indicates a Painboy can have any upgrades other then a Grot Orderly, Stikkbombs and a Bike. So, no, they can't have 'Eavy Armor.

and

B.) I'd never find this a worthwhile argument if my opponent played it as if the entire mob had 'Eavy armor: having one unit where a single model has different armor then the rest, not counting attached IC's, is simply not worth the hassle. Hence, I'd both play it myself as if they all had it, and I'd allow it from others. Call it a house rule if you must.
