I am in the process of creating a back story for my Deathwatch character, a Space Wolf Tactical Marine. This led me to wonder how aspirants are assigned to a Great Company after successfully becoming Blood Claws. While I could easily just select the Great Company he hails from I would prefer to somehow fit the selection in his story. I reread the "Blood Claws", "Rites of Initiation", "The Sons of Russ" and "The Great Companies" entries of the 5th Edition Codex. I may have overlooked it but am fairly certain it wasn't in there. I am also halfway through "Wolf's Honour", having read the previous novels as well. I do not remember it being addressed in these books either. Any help is greatly appreciated.

They will be assigned to those GC that had have battle loses, simple and plain. By the way SW don´t have tactical marines, we have Grey Hunters.

Surprise is an insubstantial blade, a sword worthless in war.
It breakes when troops rally. It snaps when commanders holt the line.
But fear never fades.
Fear is a blade that sharpens with use.
So let the enemy know we come. Let their fears defeat them as everything falls dark.
At the world´s sun set.....
As the city is wreathed in its final night.....
Let ten thousand howls promise ten thousand claws.
The Night Lords are coming.
And no soul that stands against us shall see another dawn!

Touche! Within the confines of the Deathwatch game he is a Tactical Marine. As far as his fluff is concerned he is a Grey Hunter that was on the verge of being promoted to the Wolf Scouts before his assignment to Deathwatch. That is pretty much all I have written so far, though I have a general idea in mind for the rest. I kind of got stuck on this point and trying to select which Great Company to list him from.

The Blood Claws are recruited and then trained in packs. They then join a great company in those pack. So Ragnars pack was about 4 people (give or take) so when they were assigned a pack another Blood Claw pack was also assigned as there very small pack didn't cover the casualties.

Thanks to both of you. I guess I'll just pick a Great Company then and go from there. I really appreciate the insight. If anyone does have anything else I'd love to hear it too. Thanks again.

I will say that the codex makes it clear that individual Great Companies have different styles of fighting compared to each other, due to the Wolf Lord's inclinations and preferences. That, however, may well be a reflection more of the fact that a Great Company learns to fight how its Wolf Lord wants, rather than a Wolf Lord specifically picking the sort of guys who would already be a match for his preferences.

That makes sense.

Ferocious Blood Claw

If I do recall, Erik Morkai is a specific Wolf Lord that chooses the solitary, dependable, and ruthless members of the Space Wolves for his Great Company. His company might be a good fit. As other suggested, check the company descriptions and decide who fits your character's play style.

War within, War without, War everlasting.

I had actually read through the descriptions and that was partly what led me to this question. My thought being that if the Companies received the Blood Claws that most fit their style of combat and way of thinking each Company would wind up being "The Scout Company" or "The Assault Company". Being as that isn't the case I became curious. I may select Morkai's Company for the sake of simplicity or another to complicate things. Thank you again to each of you.
