While searching through some Imperial Armour stuff, i found something weird....

There are several incarnations of a titan-scale weapon in different incarnations,

the volcano cannon:

On a 3structurepoint-chassis it has 5" blast 120" range

On a 6sp-Reaver Titan it has 7" blast 180" range

On a 9sp-Warlord Titan it has 10"blast 240"range

Now, both the Reaver Titan and the Warlord have the option of using arm-weapon melta cannons ( 72" S10 ap 1 Ordnance 1, 10" Blast with 3d6 penetration under the center of the blastmarker, 2d6 against every other vehicle under the blastmarker).

In comparison with the Reaver's Volcano Cannon, 10" Blast may be more usefull against lots of targets..... however I cannot see the point of taking a melta cannon on a warlord. From my point of view, there is no single advantage the Melta cannon has over the Warlord's Volcano Cannon.
Destroyer-Weapon has + 1 on the Damage Chart, just like ap 1 has... both have 10" blast and ignore armour Saves.....
but the Volcano Cannon autopenetrates and ignores cover.

Anyone confused?

Sources: GW Apocalypse & IA Apocalypse 2

Edit:
The Damage-Chart on p 93 of GW Apocalypse may implie that ap1 has no effect on super-heavies whatsoever... making Melta Cannon EVEN worse...

this is more tactics then ymdc but ...

say you're fighting a unit of warwalkers (AV10) they have Bright lances (total of 6) that unit is able to hurt you super heavys ... Str10 AP1 melta 10" blast evaporates them basicly you always hit and always pen AV10.

As for other units well theres very little it can't easily hurt. It removes all AV with easy. Leman Russ squad? dead. Terminus Landraider? dead. Ork Kanz covered by a kustom force field? Dead.

Makes more sense here, I think! (Thanks Tri!)

As to your actual question, I think you've answered it?

I love the fact that they include all the 'old' Titan weapons though!

Tactically, the Melta Cannon is only ever worth taking on the Reaver because it retains the 10" blast while the Volcano Cannon is downgraded to 7". The choice between the two mainly comes down to how much cover is on the board as cover will impact the Melta but not the Volcano.

Does it make sense to get the melta cannon on an imperator titan's carapace? Or some other cannon makes more impact?

So.. then why is the Melta Cannon designed the way it is for the Warlord??

Warlords Data Sheet came months before official Reaver Data Sheet.... and i doubt that the Designer put a weaker weapon for the same cost into the options just for fluff reasons... Adeptus Titanicus had a lot of different melee weapons for Battle titans, and different alternatives for one-shot vortex missiles..

It's like saying " you may replace your stormbolter with a triple barrel-bolter Assault 3 for no additional cost"....

Maybe Titan weapons were first designed with their own point costs, and a lower basic point cost for the titan chassis to add upon...

I mean.. the Scout Titan weapons are soooo not equal... consider Stormblade and Stormlord for comparison...

Its no different then titans ever were in Epic 2nd edition, they were flat priced as in apocalypse, and some guns were just outright better then others.

The real solution would be for the guns to be bought like they are on every other model in the game, then one being better then the other is easily solved with pricing.

Honestly, when you're looking at the firepower a titans weapon unleashes, I don't think it really even matters. A weaker gun on a Warlord titan is still absolutely going to completely and utterly wreck whatever you fire it at.

It makes perfect sense does no one understand?

You may have a non destroyer larger blast, or a smaller better blast? Questions?

OBVIOUSLY people have there preferences, but there are battlefield situations where one is better than the other.

Duh...

The situation you describe is about the Reaver Titan, whose Volcano Cannon has 7" blast.
The Warlord's however is 10" blast like the Melta cannon...

Have anybody tried the weapons loadouts described here? Maybe the battlefield will demonstrate better how the weapons react when used? Just a suggestion.
